"Does it hot?" deconstructed
I'm not going to make many friends with this post, but after seeing a similar situation here today my conscience forces me to intervene.
The RFD meme "Does it hot?" *is* funny on the surface ...but when you dig a little deeper you realize that the guy Mantiev who first wrote this awkward question is from Montreal and previous posts indicate that it's very likely that he primarily speaks French (most of his posts are grammatically sound, yet he sometimes uses figures of speech and grammar common in French but less so in English). I can appreciate a good chuckle when a native English speaker uses bad English grammar (as seen *so* often online) and I cringe when a French speaker cannot differentiate infinitives from past participles and butchers the written language. However that guy was apparently making a genuine effort to write in his second language from a predominantly French-speaking province where high school English courses used to provide you with only a basic command of this official language, barely any better than French-as-a-second-language courses in Ontario.
...so while I cannot blame anyone for not checking out this OP's origins, keeping on quoting and laughing at "Does it hot?" under this light doesn't sound very Canadian to me.Last edited by RMSimard; Sep 2nd, 2009 at 01:58 PM. Reason: typo

I agree. On one hand, it is kind of mean to make fun of someone who is trying his/her best to speak/write in the local language. The guy gets points for that.
On the other hand, it works as a meme - short and to the point. And with enough posters using it properly, it is this close to making it on my list of in-house RFD references._______________

So that's how the phrase started! For a while I never knew why people put "does it hot" other then it's a grammatical mistake as it's too far off to be a typo. Anyway that isn't as bad as the rediculous sewing machine thing for all DoD's for Dell! I wish that joke would end as it's not THAT funny.
