I'm sure there's some $500 rusted civics you can find on craigslist to suit your needs.

Better yet, why don't you buy something that will retain it's value so you can sell it after years of usage at a minimal lost? (ie. I bought a 00 civic for $3000, drove it for two years while in school and sold it for $2800 after 40,000 kms)

Lots of cars. Check out the Ford Focus from 2002 or around that year. Very cheap to insure, cheaper than Civic/Corolla, etc.
Only get the ztec-e engine, the other engine offered has lots of issues.
Should be a very cheap car, low on ins, cheap parts.
And good for a beater or winter.

Nobody wants to certify or guarantee a car that's worth so little. That's why its much easier to just say as-is.

@op

Just use kijii and search within a price range. Find one that will suit your needs. Around this time of the year lots will be sold as winter beaters.

+1

Civics, Preludes, RSX... those hold their value very well, especially if the km is around 200k or down. Sometimes you can drop a good 10000 - 30000km more on it and still sell it for what you bought it for.

For example, here in Vancouver a year 1997 or so Civic with 160k km - 220k km or so on the odometer go for around 4000... often regardless of the trim. You could probably buy one at around 170k km and drive it to about 200k km and still sell it for what you paid.
