We have very bad experience with Deluxe Alarms Inc. I made at least 10 phone calls trying to cancel the service. Then they billed us for the alarm system which is supposed to be ours once the contract term is over. We are getting a lawyer to deal with them now. Think twice if you want to use Deluxe Alarms Inc.

Here's some food for thought: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=95829. This thread will likely suffer the same fate.
Next time do an internet search and check references of a company before you do business with them. The link above is the second hit on Google.Last edited by MacGyver; May 12th, 2010 at 04:33 PM.

Yup, good luck.
You can't just go posting things like that. The internet is not as anonymous as you might think.

Help / Need Advice!
My builder, Rosehaven, contracted the alarm system to Grand Alarms and damn, I signed the Agreement in June 2010 without having read the contract's terms and conditions. The reason I signed it was because Grand Alarms was the one tasked to install conduits and speaker rough-ins, and I was thinking all the terms and conditions had pertained to payment/non-payment and the contractor's recourse as the lady representative did not give me or my wife time to read the contract in detail but had even told us we can discuss about the alarm system at a later time. It was my mistake for not having done proper due diligence but here's where the problem lies:
The lady we dealt with, Victoria, said, at the time of the meeting:
that the equipment will be ours once the contract term is over but the agreement says it will remain Grand Alarms
that contact length can vary from I believe 1 to 5 years but this agreement says it's enforceable to 5 years
that it was okay not to have a landline but now the agreement does say it will require one. I've been on VOIP for the last two years and am not switching back to land line, just for the monitoring services.
Because the alarm system is free to use for 1 year, courtesy of the builder, is there any recourse or way for my wife and I to cancel this contract? Closing date isn't until November 3rd but then Grand Alarms had already installed the equipment. We were only at the home site for PDI last week but we never saw the equipment being installed or tested. The builder would not have been able to provide the 1-year free monitoring service had Grand Alarms not installed the proper equipment. So can this argument be used to rescind the contract, i.e. it was the builder who gave us 1 year of monitoring service for free and so installation of the equipment would have been necessary, the problem is the other 4 years down the road?
I'd rather rescind the contract now than have to live with the 5 years with this service provider since what the representative did is horrible by fudging what she knew was stated in the agreement just for us to sign
For people previously in similar situations, is there any way I can rescind this agreement? I've read through them now and the fee included is $25 + taxes /month.
It was really my mistake for having believed what we were told verbally (my wife the witness) but I'm quite surprise the lady had misrepresented the terms of the contract to get us to sign it. Can we seek a lawyer or some organization to null the contract? The problem I see is that the contractor can take the equipment off and leave dry walls in bad shape.
I think there's been a few RFDer who skipped Grand Alarms' service. I am hoping some of you can help us.
Thanks in advance.Last edited by alanbrenton; Oct 28th, 2010 at 10:38 PM.

I was a previous customer with Deluxe alaram, and I will never deal with them again. After 2 years with them I called them to tell them that I sold the house and I want to stop the service. They told me that
I am in a 5 years contract (which I was misinformed at the time of signing they told me it's a 2 years contract) and I have one of 2 options either to convince the new owner to sign with them or to pay for the rest of the term. I was lucky and the new owner took over the contract.

I deliberated about this for a while when we bought our Aspen Ridge home earlier this year. In the end, I signed a contract with Built-In Systems (Grand Alarms) because, as was pointed out, they are the only contractor allowed to do the wiring during construction. I figured it would be a cleaner installation that way. The more I read about Grand Alarms, the more I wish I hadn't signed that contract.
We bought nothing else through Grand Alarms, except the basement to attic conduit. I'll run other wires myself. To hear the rep talk about a vapour barrier as if it was made of space-age polymers that could not be breached after construction, or else your house would be mould infested, was hilarious. If you cut the vapour barrier, do a proper job and seal it. That's it. It's not the surgery she made it our to be. That scare tactic should have been a tip-off.
That said, our rep was honest enough to tell us we would not own the alarm system after 5 years, but that they wouldn't take the contacts or motion detectors with them. They would only want the box back. I hope that was the truth, because I can live with that. I will have the 5 year contract length on my mind, much like I can't wait to get out of my fixed price contract with Direct Energy I was stupid enough to verbally "sign" 3 years ago.
And I've heard that Grand Alarms monitors Internet complaints and will sick their lawyers on site owners, so I wouldn't be surprised to see this thread disappear.

Deluxe Alarms and Resale Homes - Be wary
Hi there,
I too am really unimpressed with Deluxe Alarms from a customer service standpoint. We just bought a 1 1/2 year old home and it already had a system installed. The previous owners didn't leave us an owner's manual or the code, and the chime rings every time we walk down the front hall, so I called Deluxe to see if someone could come out and service/reset the system. They put me through to an unpleasant representative who informed me bluntly that unless I signed up on a contract, they would not come and service our system. I don't want a monitored system and I am definitely not signing up for a contract! I don't understand why I can't just pay to have a tech come out and reset the system. They installed it, it seems reasonable to think that they should be able to service it, regardless of whether I subscribe to their service.
The only thing I can think of, having read some of the other posts in this thread and elsewhere, is that the original homeowners were also on a longer term contract, and Deluxe is now annoyed at them having moved before the contract was up. However, the representative let slip that the previous home owners activated a new system at their new residence, so I don't know what the fuss is about.
So now I'm searching for another alarm company who deals with the system we have.
My general impression seems to be that when they do things right, there is no problem (a lot of other sites rated them quite highly), but if you have an issue, do not expect pleasant customer service. Kind-of reminded me of dealing with Bell...
Overall, thumbs down for sure.

I am with Deluxe Alarm too as our new home came with a free set of alarm and they're the only contractor allowed to run wires during construction. Purchased 2 extra keypad and motion sensors. Been using them for like 4 years. I haven't tried to terminate but now I'm thinking of getting another company that offers wireless GSM hookup so that I can get rid of the landline. Anyone using those kinda hookup? I heard that using landline is easy to cut. I hope I don't have to go through the same thing once decide to leave them.

To Maurynna:
If the system installed is from a common manufacturer, such as DSC, then I would highly recommend The Monitoring Center.
Although you are not looking for monitoring, their monthly fees over a year, would be less than the cost of a technician's visit (to eliminate the motion sensor ding). Of course, there may be a fee for setup and a TMC technician may have to visit, but overall you could get a year's service and have the system operating the way you want.
Edit: 6 Months Fee Sign-up Bonus.
