Dreamhost.com 1yr Hosting + Domain = $9.24 USD
Hey,
My apologies for a repost but dreamhost.com has a promotion where you get 1 year of hosting and domain registration for $9.24 USD using promotional code '777'.
However, the offer ends today (March 27, 2009).
See http://www.dreamhost.com/
Cheers,
Rohit

Good deal, though beware of some hidden snafus. I was hosting some domains under my Mom's hosting package, then jumped on the deal from January for 2 years hosting to get my own package. They don't allow you to transfer domains to accounts signed up with promo codes, so I was left with 2 years hosting and unable to transfer my domains unless I wanted to pay full price. I cancelled my account shortly thereafter.

Buyer beware. These guys go down more than a Peruvian hooker.

Could you give further details on the horror stories? Have a 2yr hosting package with them and have had nothing but good experiences with them, in fact, I have read relatively good things about them.
Thanks!

besides the long multiple daily downtimes...
i was emailing these guys at least once a month when i hosted a bunch of small sites with them. i had problems with billing, email accounts disappeared, email accounts stopped working and important emails were lost and couldn't be recovered from a backup, domains stopped working, forwarded domains also stopped working. and a bunch of other issues i probably forgot about.
their customer service guys were a joke. they could never do anything to really help me, they would say sorry and give me some ******** excuses about a server died or harddrive crashing and tell me settings were lost and a new configuration had to be setup. it seemed like a new configuration had to be setup on a monthly basis. i had their hosting for a year with no problem, then a year filled with a ton of problems. i hosted my friends business site and emails and they lost some important stuff. they were pissed. just after that fiasco one of my domains started to get popular and i needed better reliability so i left. smartest thing i ever did.
i wouldn't recommend dreamhost to anyone who needs reliability. if you're just looking for a place to mess around with unimportant stuff that will never be popular, then it would be okay... i guess.

Newbie
I've had decent experience with DreamHost
Then again, it's my personal website, that family and friends might hit 10-20 times a week, and just a basic CMS. I've noticed server/network problems once or twice a year.
I like it because I have SSH access and unlimited sub-domains and MySQL databases, so I can experiment.
For a serious, commercial/corporate site, the shared hosting sites are pretty slow.

I have been a paying customer of DreamHost since 1999 (yes, 10 years), and I can tell you that their uptime is NOT BAD AT ALL. They have gone down a bit in recent years (were like 99.97% before), but still, "long multiple daily downtimes"? I don't think any web hosting company can survive more than 3 months if that is true.
What I like most is that they are very honest and upfront even about their downtime (at dreamhoststatus.com). Few others in the industry would dare to go into such details in an open manner.
And don't worry about signing up and changing your mind later, they WILL refund any unused portion.
The bottom line is, for US$9.24 a YEAR (which also comes with a free domain), you can't go wrong.

yeah $10 for a domain+hosting to screw around with? that's pretty good deal imo.
no one is telling you to host a huge corporate website on this plan, why would you?
