Driveway needs ramp in front of the garage

Hi everyone,

My asphalt driveway sunk a little in front of the garage so the water pools in there. I figured it needs a ramp / lip added. Now I understand the way most contractors do this is by pouring hot asphalt on top of the old, and if done properly, lasts a few years. I was thinking whether it would be a good idea to actually cut the old asphalt for about 2-3 feet from the garage floor, add some gravel / sand to raise it back to level and then pour new asphalt. Of course this needs good prep work done at the junction so water doesn't seep in, but it seems to me like a better solution in the long term

Any comments / ideas? On a side note, can anyone recommend a GOOD contractor to do this kind of job in the Ottawa area?

We don't do asphalt driveways in my part of the country, however I would think that if you are going to run into problems with patching new asphalt over old then you'll run into the same problems where the new patch meets the old 2-3 feet down.

On our roads here we apply multiple layers of asphalt at different times (years apart sometimes), so I think if it's good enough for a roadway it's good enough for your driveway.

Thanks! My thought was the erosion is more likely to happen where the new layer gets thin so it merges with the old, rather than when they bond together side by side. I am not sure if I can explain this well enough
