Driving in Iceland in January?

My fiance and I are thinking of going back to Iceland as part of our honeymoon in January to see the Northern Lights. We got engaged there in April 2013 and we drove around the whole country. The south side was pretty tame but the north side still had some snow and it got difficult at times with random snow squalls.

Has anyone driven around Iceland in January? Do you think we need a AWD vehicle? How is the weather in January? I heard daylight is maximum 6 hours during that time. We are planning to only stay on the south side.

Any input is appreciated.
