I bought one of these a few months back on half off day (non network) and it's been a nightmare.
Loud and slow. You were warned.

Not saying these are great as I haven't used them personally, but I believe that's half your problem right there. A lot of people say there are cheaper/better solutions, but they may require more config/setup than these. From what I have heard these are essentially plug and play (i.e. minimal setup).

True for simple and easy to setup but it is very slow. Drobo known for this even using Firewire 800 connection in Mac, data transfer is very very slow.
Better get Synology or ReadyNas.

I've had a drobo (fw800) for about 3 years now. Best computer related purchase I ever made. I work in I.T., hell, I've been working in I.T. about 15 years, I don't want to do my job at home anymore. At some point a few seconds of speed becomes far less important than ease of setup and reliability. The thing just works, period. Hot swappable redundant drives etc.
If you're the kind of person that will spend hours upon hours to save a few bucks (and a few seconds of transfer speed ... hello false economy), then this isn't a value proposition for you. For the rest of us that have busy lives that don't want to worry about our data, this is perfect. I was all over the DIY stuff when I had the time for a hobby like that and I'm not knocking it, it's fun and it's educational and technology skills are necessary these days.... but pretending that you're saving time because your backups are a few seconds faster is BS. You don't need speed for backups, your backups should be scheduled when you're sleeping anyway.
"Loud"?
Whatever drives you may toss into it might be loud, but the drobo itself is just a piece of solid state tech, it doesn't make any noise except the fan and I don't hear mine at all, ever. So if your fan is loud it's probably defective.
