DSL "line noise" on upload only -- why?

I am a Teksavvy DSL customer (DSL High Speed 15 service). For quite some time I have been having trouble getting the full advertised upload speed on my connection (I typically max out around 0.67 Mbps when I should be getting 1.0 Mbps) On enquiring with a Teksavvy rep, I was told that there is significant "noise on the line" that is limiting the upload speed. The rep recommended that I use a shorter phone cable between the jack and the DSL modem, which I did; this improved my download speed, which was already fine, by about 5%, but did nothing for my upload speed.

My questions:
  1. Is the line noise problem likely to be "my fault" (inside my house, my responsibility) or something on Teksavvy or Bell's end?
  2. What can I do to get rid of the line noise?
  3. Why would the line noise be affecting uploads only, and not downloads?
Thanks in advance.

the line noise can be your fault or with bell physical lines, which is why a lot of people prefer cable. You should try disconnecting all phones including alarm and retesting then you will likely have your answer. Bell and teksavvy is not responsible for fixing your wiring inside your own home but will fix it for a fee.

If you're using a pots splitter at the demarc and have the dsl modem plugged in really close and still have high line noise, it's probably not your fault.

1mbps minus DSL overhead =/= 1mbps

Did you check your line stats? What does your modem sync at?

But our beloved android stb supplier / hot chick avatar member swore that cable was crap compared to DSL! What do?

My DSL modem is connected to the phone jack by a 6' cable, and the phone jack itself is wired right to the demarcation point, which is about 12 feet away from it.

Below is the data given to me by Teksavvy. I do not know how to interpret it.

DLM State: DISABLED Equipment Type: OSLAM

Your upstream SNR is 7db which is pretty good. You can ask them to try to sync you to higher profile.

My guess I'd that 824 is as fast as you'll get without going VDSL.

I have the issue, and there is no sign of VDSL in my area. I can barely get 7/1. I'm switching to cable next week.

I should add that Teksavvy has told me they put a "cap" on the upload speed at 880 kbps to ensure a stable connection. (?)
Unplugging the phones does nothing to improve the speed.

It means that higher sync speeds will drop your SNR below 6db.

This is the best you'll get. Ask them VDsL is available in your area.

When I used to be with Bell I had 6 down and 1 up. Never got up to 1 Mbps; it maxed out at 0.8. Normally is was around your speed. Never ever saw it at 0.9 Mbps. Unless you really need the extra 41.25 kilobytes per second upload speed because you do Youtube or something, it's really nothing and you shouldn't worry about it.

Have you worked through the problem on the Teksavvy forum on DSLReports?

There are some VERY knowledgeable people on there.
