Which DVD Burner to Buy?
I'm thinking about getting a new DVD burner. My 4X is becoming too slow for me. I've heard about some people burning 8X TY discs at 16X. Which burners do that? I'd like one of those since I have 100 8X TY discs here. Also, what burner is the best overall? I was going to get the Benq 1620 but I've heard some bad things lately. All help is greatly appreciated.

If you want the best DVD burners, go for Plextor PX-716A, or if you want to spend a little less, a Pioneer DVR-109. In my opinion, these are the best drives out there right now...

I bought the LG 4163, no issues. It can be had in a few places for about $70, no MIR

I have pioneers 105 & 106. Both of them are still working well. I recommend the Pioneers DVD drive.

The Benq is great!
NCIX has it on sale.

DO NOT BUY THE BENQ.

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
Get the PLEXTOR or the PIONEER.
Maybe the old BenQ models were good, but they switched something in these drives with the new manufacturers date. They are horrid now.

Are you sure it's not the nVidia IDE drivers that are causing this problem? That's what I read just now on the NCIX forums ..

My BenQ is fine. It's an October 2004 batch I think.
Edit: oops, it's an August 2004 one.

wow, different opinions from everyone. i was thinking about getting the benq on sale at ncix since it would come to $75 shipped to the GTA. the threads about the benq on here and the threads on ncix were steering me away though. but i love my benq cd burner so i would think their dvd burners would be good too. i dunno... maybe ill just wait since i can get it from canada computers for $2 more.

i would SERIOUSLY advise against the benq
the happy campers with this drive bought them a while ago, they have drastically changed from what i can gather lately.
the RMA's are through the roof at BenQ for the drives.

If you want to burn dvd-ram or save a couple bucks and still get a decent drive look for an LG (although some models are better than others). If you wanna play it safe get a Pioneer (tho there is no dvd-ram in them).
Another vote against BenQ here. Too many horror stories about these drives keep showing up as of late.

Plextor is easily the Cadillac of optical drives. I can also recommend the Sony's and Pioneer as I have a couple of them scattered across my machines.
I would steer clear of benq though, their quality control doesn't seem to be as high as when they were aopen. Though they are improving, most notably their latest 8ms LCD's

ill probably wait till an LG or Pioneer goes on sale then. I've heard very good things about pioneer in the past and my current burner is an LG which is excellent but 4X. i heard the plextor dvd burners are not as good as their cd burners were and theyre past my budget. and ive also heard that sony is liteon.
