DVD Speeds ?
Why is that CD burners are capable of burning at 52X speed yet DVD burners have topped out at 16X for single layer and 6X for DL?

the speed is based on how many times faster compared to the original 1st drive. So a 52x CD is 52 times faster than the first cd-rom drive. 16x DVD is 16x faster than the 1st dvd. This doesn't mean the TRANSFER rate is the same as a CD though.

1xDVD is faster than 8xCD (almost 9x)
16xDVD x 8 = 128xCD.
