stupid question but is a 7 year old desktop compatible with this harddrive? Been using SSD's on two laptops and performance has been great

As long as you have extra sata port on mobo and extra sata cable from psu. Most 10 year old pc should be fine but no one can guarantee until you have the exact model numb

You won't get the drive's full potential, depending on what generation of SATA your motherboard supports, but it will still be a nice upgrade.
