Ebay/Paypal Question.
I know paypal is evil, but I dont usually sell stuff on ebay that goes over $40 or $50us.
I just sold a game system and to my surprise it went for nearly $70us, I thought I would be lucky to get $40 for it. Then the person *first time ebay, but registered over a year ago* pays me within 5 minutes of the auction close twice. Then I get an email asking for the one payment to be sent back.
His paypal is unverified and the thing says its completed.
So my question is should I be concerned about this? My instincts are telling me to hold off sending the one payment back for at least 3 weeks, and even to hold off on sending the game system to him incase both payments bounce. Im going to send with tracking, so I can at least prove to ebay that the item was sent, but I know how much ebay helps out thier sellers.
Any comments?
slight edit > Paypal says ..
Seller Protection Policy: Eligible
Shipping Address: Confirmed
Payment From: Unverified
I seen the unverified and thought right away the rest wasnt confirmed.

I see nothing to really worry about. Unverified just means that his/her paypal account hasn't reached sending limit yet.
You're covered under Paypal's Seller protection with confirmed address and tracking.
Refund the buyer the second payment.

Not to mean to hijack this thread, but:
My paypal account was frozen because I was negative $250 because they took it out because of a fraudulent buyer chargeback (*******). They said I am responsible for the money so I flipped them the bird and finally got the NCO off my back (pretty sure they can't affect my credit).
Anyways, I now have no paypal to do my ebay stuff with. Can I just open a new account with a new email address, bank account, house address etc?

Im just very weary of charge backs. :0)
How far will paypal go to get thier money back if the buyer does a charge back and if ive already sent the money to another seller? I was thinking "what if" I sent my money *not the 2nd payment* to a good friend, and had them cash it out. Would they go after that friend and take the money out of thier account?
Also if I take off my credit cards from paypal, could they reactivate them on my account and charge them the chargedback amount? Just wondering how ruthless paypal is. :0)
$140 american is a bit of money to me right now *the $70 x 2*

I dont' think that's what unverified means..
Unverified means that the person hasn't confirmed his location and credit card by going through a series of procedures. Usually a phone call to his house. That's what verfied means.

But the shipping address is confirmed. Perhaps the name isnt verified but the address is?

confirmed and verified are different things.
confirmed address means that the address is confirmed based on the credit card billing address.
verified is different kind of security check. I did it a long time ago and it involves registering a credit card, a bank account, and a phone call to your house. they will also make a small deposit into your account to verify that it is your account. I'm not sure if they changed it now.

Yep, that's exactly what verified is.
But most people usually verify their accounts because they want to sell on ebay(meaning they want to transfer money from Paypal to bank account) and/or to lift the $1,000 sending limit. The catch is you have to give Paypal your bank account information to become verified(and Paypal defaults the buyer to pay via Bank account instead of credit card). It is not mandatory to be verified and it's very very common for first time buyers to have unverified accounts.

Are you saying that this relatively new buyer bought 1 item for $70.00, but paid you twice for the same item, and is now asking for the 2nd payment to be sent back?
If that is the case, you are asking for a chargeback if you don't send it back. Not to mention the negative feedback you will likely receive.
I have had ebay newbies accidentally pay me twice several times. To keep things straight, I send back one of the payments, and have never had an issue with the other payment.
Edit: as just pointed out, I REFUND the payment back, so Paypal can see that the extra payment has been returned, and does not pull the payment I kept.

Don't "send" him back the money, rather, I think there's a option to refund the payment

Whats that suppose to mean? The guy send you double the payment and now your acting as if that extra $70 is yours? Yes its alot of money but only half the money is yours. Dont be greedy and return whats rightfully his, many people have sent payment twice (because server acts too damn slow) and people think it didnt send.

I don't think you have a right to hold a second payment for 3 weeks. Switch the tables around. If you made that mistake, would you like it if the seller held your money?
He won the auction. He paid. Refund the second payment. You cannot bounce PayPal transactions. He can file a dispute and if you do not contest it, it will be taken out of your account.
If the buyer was going to scam you. He would set his sights on a larger target. $70 is chump change. Scammers usually want money, not product.
What you are doing is morally wrong.
1. Refund the second payment
2. Ship out his item ASAP

and if you are trading on ebay, you should generally trade only with people with either verified status or confirmed addresses and decent feedback
I recently sold something on ebay, this buyer has 0 feedback and has unconfirmed address, and unverified. So I refunded his money and told him i won't trade with him.
This is a good indication that they are using a phony or stolen credit card. It might not always be the case, but you have to protect yourself. So i just offered second chances to other bidders.

In this case, he has a confirmed address. PayPal was also used and Seller Protection is enabled.
Risk is minimal.
If you have any doubts, then refund both payments and tell him you will not deal with him. But holding BOTH payments and the PRODUCT for 3 weeks is unacceptable and not fair to the bidder. It is just WRONG!!!!
