EI employee loses her job for doing the right thing

What a brave young lady. EI has targets to meet & quotas to adhere to. So they will deny or reduce the payments of perfectly eligible laid off employees just to meet their quotas.

These are employees who have paid EI their whole life, Its not like they are making a false claim or are ineligible for EI. But to meet their quotas EI tells them to take a hike, when they get laid off due to NO fault of theirs and have more than enough hours to make an EI claim.

This brave lady exposed the great EI scam, but sadly was canned for it.

Sylvie Therrien, a former EI fraud investigator who spoke out about being pressured to meet savings quotas by reducing payouts, says her decision has taken a huge toll.

Sylvie Therrien lost her job as a fraud investigator with Service Canada in Vancouver after leaking information to the media about aggressive government targets for reducing EI benefit payouts.

EI fraud investigator axed for leaking “quota” details

A federal fraud investigator who was suspended from her job for leaking documents showing a Conservative crackdown on EI recipients has been fired.

The federal fraud investigator who leaked documents exposing a Conservative crackdown on those receiving EI has been fired from her job.

Sylvie Therrien, 53, who worked out of a Vancouver office, learned Tuesday that she has been terminated from her position.

She says she was penalized for not meeting her monthly quota. She claimed she was encouraged by managers to interpret facts in a way that would trim EI benefits.

She says that she had complained to her supervisors about what was happening, but then was “targeted’’ and became viewed as “the enemy.’’

Reminds me of Cops who have a Speeding ticket quotas or Parking Officers who have a parking ticket quotas.

They will do anything to meet their monthly quotas , even if its mean fining and catching innocent motorist's who were not speeding or illegally parked.

Sad.

There are lots of stupid quotas that are unreasonable in many jobs, that make some of them sales-like when they should be the complete opposite. Another is some pharmacists having flu shot quotas this season. That's just how it is.

Sounds like what a government agency would do when it has your money and all the power to decide whether they will give it back to you or not.

Add that to the list of a million reasons why we should never trust the government.

Stupid Quotas (read: Meaningless targets, not statistically driven performance targets) are always the first thing to go when you start looking at process improvements just for that reason. They don't mean a damn thing.

Hope she gets her job back - it's a sad reality that whistleblowers have to face consequences like this. Thanks for raising publicity on this OP.

Flu shot quota? Interesting... I wonder who sets it? ie is it the Ministry of Health's quota or the pharmacy's?

The pharmaceutical companies like Glaxo, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson lobby the gov. hard to buy X amount of flu shots bottles. Kickbacks, donations to the political party are given.

Later on the pharmacies like SDM, Rexall and even the doctors make some nice coin on it at the expense of tax payers.

Lot of flu shot bottles are wasted and thrown away. But Big Pharma has already made money on it.

Next time you get laid off and the incompetent and corrupt EI dept. denies or significantly delays a perfectly legitimate claim, now you know why ? Their quota was reached for the day or week, time to kick you out.

Some EI employees deliberately delay your EI payment, so that under financial pressure you are forced to take up any low level jobs that comes your way. And then they tell you, guess what ? Your EI for the good job from which you were laid off, was approved but now that you have a job ( and you could be working in McDonalds by now ), we won't pay you a penny.

Now if you quit your low level job you can't get EI either as quitting doesn't get you EI.

I know someone who was laid off from a good job & was perfectly eligible for EI , who was given the run around by EI. They wouldn't deny his claim nor would they approve it, they were just delaying it and playing the waiting game with. Finally he was forced to take up a low level very low paying labour job.

EI didn't have to pay him a penny. No retroactive pay, nothing.

Compassionate care EI , Maternity EI, Laid Off EI are rejected left, right & centre by EI. Lot of these folks don't have the means to fight it out or genuinely believe the lies EI tells them and really think that they don't qualify or are ineligible. When just the opposite is true.

EI is a pure cash cow for the Government.

Is this Province specific?
I know of hundreds of employees who were caught in major layoffs (high tech sector here in Ottawa) and none had issues going on EI!

Sorry OP but the majority of your opinions in this thread are completely baseless.

I have not worked in any Government department that has not had some type of goal or target. This is the only way to measures someone’s performance and they generally aren’t enforced to the degree the lady in the article states or as to the extent you presented in your opinion.

Sorry to burst your bubble but ‘Government employees’ are just regular people looking to pay their bills like everyone else. They’re definitely not out to ‘get out’ as some like to believe.
