[Zellers] [Merged] Zellers Prepaid Samsung Gio 99.99$ now 69.99$ + 50k HBC bonus points

This is in store only. Bell version is selling for 249$ at Bell 149$ at Virgin.
Nice Android 2.3 phone.

Phone works with Bell/Virgin/PC Mobile as is (locked to Bell). No cheap IMEI unlock available yet.

IT HAS NO FM RADIO

FASTGSM Unlock FAQ (USB unlock):

It's a bit tricky to do but I finally managed to get it unlocked for 10 $ US

https://www.fastgsm.com/en/samsung/sams ... k-unlocker

Their site has a special way of confusing matters. The Youtube clip does not helps as it compresses the client steps without too many details. Simple steps:

0) You may need the Kies software so that your PC recognizes your phone. It may be found here by clicking on software:

http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/mobi ... ab=support

1) Create an account and buy the unlock credit on the site.

2) Download the Samsung client they have on the page above.

3) If your phone has a SIM card inside, power off the phone , remove the SIM card and power on the phone. Type *#7284# on phone keypad and select USB (Option 1). Restart your phone.

4) On the home screen hit Applications button and go to Settings > Applications > Development and check USB Debugging. Confirm when it prompts you OK. Go back to the Home screen.

5) Install the client which will also run it. Login using your account. Select the S5660M model, not the other S5660x models.

6) Plugin the USB cable so that the phone is connected to your PC. Wait till any/all drivers are installed. Click Next twice and it should unlock your phone.

7) WRITE DOWN or PRINT the two codes on the screen! In case it fails the unlock, you can manually type it in. You WILL ALSO NEED THIS CODE if you ever upgrade the firmware on this phone, you need to type it in again to unlock it!

Thanks to yuprules for #7.

They wouldn't sell it unlocked at this price.

No idea. It kind of looked like a pricing error since the Entro ( :?: ) was next to it at the same price. However, the guy scanned it came out at the 99$.

Check your local Zellers, this was in the glass counter. I got all 3 at Alexis-Nihon plaza. Took a photo but the system will not let me attach it for some reason (forum quota?)

Zellers has the Bell version.

lol, I will if I cannot find any buyers at work. This is freaking cheap for a brand new Android Gingerbread phone and you do not need to go through the pain of the Koodoo Optimus which is crap anyhow (the screen cracked after a month on mine).

The box mentions some kind of 30$ credit but I cannot find any details about it anywhere. Anyone know anything about it?

Just picked one up for the GF at Mississauga Square One Zellers for $100
At 5:20 pm they still had three left

Is there a way to turn off network data and use wifi only data?
I don't want the GF to get hit with some huge bill for accidental data usage.

How to update to Gingerbread
(does this happen automatically via Bell network?)

This is good news if it is Canada-wise. I was afraid it was a local screw-up. The mall I bought it at has it for 99.99$ in the basement Zellers, 149$ on the ground floor Virgin and 249$ on the second floor Bell.

It's amazing how integrated Virgin and Bell are. The case I bought at the Bell store earlier today showed up on the Virgin database ( I peeked over the guy's shoulder) when I returned the Virgin Gio I bought earlier this week. Bell is getting Big Brotherish.

2.3 is preloaded so no need to update. You can disable network data the following ways:
The first method and the most simple is to delete all the APNs that you have set. You can find them in Settings / Wireless & Networks / Mobile Networks / Access Points. Select the APN you wish to delete and click the Menu button to bring up the options sub-menu and choose Delete.

While the above method is the safest, I wouldn't recommend doing it 'cause it will require you to fill set the APN every time you want to log on the Internet without an Wi-Fi connection.

Another interesting method to disable mobile data connection without going into the phone's settings is to dial *#*#4636#*#*, go to Phone Information and click Disable Data Connection.

You can also disable data connection using a third-party application that you can download from the Android Market.

The last option is probably best. The safest is deleting all APNs.

The GF will never use network data as she is on prepaid.
WiFi is the only option for her.

I assume that deleting all APNs will still allow you to use WiFi data.

The *#*#4636#*#* solution seems like the easiest to me.
How could it go wrong if you turn it off at the source

Good to hear that Gingerbread is already loaded.
Less work for me!

Would this need to be unlocked to work with Virgin -- considering how close they are to Bell?
