I'm from Ottawa and ordered from Whiteflash (they used Fedex when I purchased a year ago). When I purchased I actually looked up the fees on the Fedex site and it was low. You have to pay the HST, but the duty fees were only like 9$ or something. I think it all depends on the type of shipping they use.
9$ obviously isn't worth the hassle to ship to Ogsdenburg.

I think asscher cut diamond ring is appropriate as engagement ring. You should get an asscher cut diamond ring for engagement.

I went with briangavindiamonds.com. Speak witha rep either on phone or via email, you'll see they are awesome. Also, make sure you don't pay more than you have to, ask the rep to look at the ring, they will tell you how clear it is at naked eye (they see diamonds all the time). My fiance has nothing bt awesome reviews about her ring/diamond and it would have cost more than double in a jewelry store. Have fun shopping.

You still have to declare it when you come over the border and pay the taxes. Not doing so would be illegal

If she likes the asscher cut. Not everyone does. Get what she likes/wants. Don't bother trying to guess, just ask or go shopping with her. I would have hated to get an asscher.
+1 on BGD.

My opinion is that you can get a great deal on a great diamond if you know what you are doing. I have purchased outstanding diamonds for steals on eBay but I know what to look for and I am not afraid to take the risk. Most have a return policy anyways so it is pretty safe.
If you are scared, Whiteflash and Brian Gavin are safe bets especially if you stick to their signature lines. You literally can't go wrong. James Allen and Blue Nile have much looser standards so there is a chance for a miss. When in doubt, post your diamond certificate on Pricescope.com for feedback.

+1 for James Allen. Got my e-ring from them a few weeks ago and I'm totally in love with it. My fiance said he had a really good experience with them - super friendly customer service, the right ring at the right price and 2 months to get a full refund if for any reason I wasn't 100% satisfied. 650 for the halo setting and 900 for the diamond. It was a little annoying to have to send in the ring to get it re-sized (my darling fiance bought the ring one up by accident) but well worth it for the massive savings in cost. I did a lot of research when we began discussing getting engaged and point blank, James Allen was the best deal I found.

Thanks for all the info. I ended up going with Blue Nile. Was hoping to pick it up on Friday, but confused the shipped date with "delivery date". So hopefully I'll have it Tuesday. I'm praying I get this all together for next weekend, at this point I'm all of a sudden feeling very unprepared. ha
