I don't know if it's appropriate to ask in this thread or not, but I'm wondering how on earth I can begin to pick up a team for myself. I watch matches here and there but I am more of a rugby league fan than anything. My rugby team is the Leeds Rhinos so my first thought was Leeds FC but... I think that would probably be too disappointing since they've been relegated for a long time and aren't looking like they'll be promoted anytime soon (which means matches would be impossible to watch anyway).
Any tips on how to choose a team? Not interested in Chelsea or Arsenal at all.

My advice would be to not jump in and pick a team too early. Watch as much as you can and get to know what the support is like, read up on the teams...even watch some of the manager interviews, check some stuff out online in fan forums and go in as informed as possible. You might, say, not wind up going with a London team because of your Yorkshire support base and wind up having a soft spot for Newcastle, for instance.
I've been an LFC supporter for just under 30 years (though I've only really gotten to watch all the games since 98 or so) and my family are Nottingham Forest. I'm kinda glad I never went that way due to them having so many issues but LFC hasn't been shy of issues lately either. I've had exes who picked Leeds and West Ham on their own with mixed results for each...I think they're very casual these days though and they seemed to choose pretty quickly and maybe they felt a bit 'stuck' with each team.

If this goes to fruition Real Madrid's dominance will fizzle out in no time. I really hope those clubs stand their ground. The situation is completely out of control.

I don't think you "just pick a team" to support, if you are not geographically/historically related to that team. I just personally watch all the top tier match especially between rivalry (United vs City, Arsenal vs Spurs etc). If you really like certain team play style/players then maybe you can watch that team more often? Some other people simply support the team that win the most trophy.

If you're a rugby fan, i think you'll be disappointed with the way players fall from "contact"

Why aren't you interested in Chelsea? They made a lot of good signings this summer, should be a great team! Likewise with Arsenal, although on a smaller scale. The best way would probably be just to watch games and see what team you find yourself cheering for. I don't support any EPL teams but i have a soft spot for Newcastle after seeing them fight for a CL spot last season.

I definitely don't want to be a bandwagon fan, so I don't care who wins the most or is most likely to win now. I suppose I do care about what teams have got the most chance of being relegated (like I said, why I'm not bothering with Leeds). I'm just the type of person who doesn't like to watch sports with complete neutrality - I like the adrenaline that comes with needing my team to do well. More fun that way for me.
So I guess I'll just watch as many matches as I can and see what happens. It's very strange being this age and trying to pick up a new team/league/sport, haha.
I've watched Chelsea and Arsenal matches and I just don't feel like I could pick them up. I also know a lot of fans of both teams, and while I realize they don't speak for the majority, they've rubbed me the wrong way about their teams. Very irrational indeed but there you have it.

Best way to do it imo, watch the game and see if there are teams that you like because of certain players/coach/play style etc. I grew quite fond of Aston Villa back in their MON days, although that's dropped considerably since they beat us at home last year pretty good

Arsenal will score some of the prettiest goals you will see...not sure what's not to like. Though I do agree they're a bit soft.

I was kind of in the same position regarding the NFL. I decided to just start cheering for Seattle because I've been there a few times, and it's the closest team to Calgary. However, I found it impossible to form a connection without really forcing it. I think the best thing you can do is what others have mentioned; watch some games when you feel like it and see who you have an affinity for.
I started watching footie when I was younger, but it took me a while to follow a team. I started supporting Liverpool because they were such a massive underdog despite their decorated past. Not much has changed, but Liverpool will always be my club, regardless of their success or failure.
