is Etching safe?

jsut got my first car ..honda civic 2007. When i bought it, the dealership asked if i wanted to etch the parts (sherlock). At that point i said no as i could get it cheaper from independent companies. Now i'm thinking if it's safe for me to do this at all, i mean is there a chance that these companies (e.g. Lebeau vitres) will changes the parts for some old crappy parts. Or am i just beign paranoid.

Well good call on not getting it done at the dealership.

What parts are you afraid of losing anyway? Etching is for windows. I'd be surprised if they swap your windows .

If you think it's worthwhile to etch, go right ahead. No need to be paranoid. You can even get a cheap kit online to do the job.

Actually, Sherlock is the one system the APA recommends, though the benefits of these systems are questionable. If your car is stolen, you get some cash - that's about it with these systems. Protector Plus is the common one in Ontario, and is often part of the "admin fee". For me, it was quite the fight to remove that fee from the invoice. My car still came with Protector Plus stickers, but apparently they are not registered. So if my car is stolen, I don't get $5000.

Sherlock prices are supposed to be set at $199, so I'm curious what they were going to charge you for it.
