Hooked on Lifejackets
July 1st - 9th, 2017 is National Fishing Week in Canada. The purpose of this week is to encourage Canadians to get out and enjoy wetting a line in one of Canada’s million lakes, rivers and streams. To encourage participation, there is no requirement for a fishing license for the two weekends bookending the week.

Independent of the week, fishing is one of Canada’s favourite pastimes for the whole family. Over 50% of every boat sold has identified fishing as the main purpose for the boat.

With this popularity, it only stands to reason that boating-related fatalities among recreational anglers constitute a significant portion of the average 130 drownings recorded each year.

Unfortunately those who fish often don’t consider themselves as boaters and, as such, boating and boating safety often take second place to the primary purpose of being on the water….to fish. This mindset also makes those who fish a difficult audience to reach with boating safety messages.

The Canadian Safe Boating Council has taken up this challenge and, during National Fishing Week, will kick-off a program called “Hooked on Lifejackets”. This initiative will focus on promoting the most basic of safe boating behaviours and one that has the greatest potential to save lives…wearing a lifejacket.

A collection of print / broadcast ready materials have been created, including an article, a print PSA and a radio PSA. They are available here on the CSBC website as an easy inclusion in any story.

The Hooked on Lifejacket initiative will continue to expand into the fishing seasons and the CSBC welcomes feedback, input and involvement in shaping this.

Thanks, I didn't know this. It is Canada wide or is it a provincial initiative? Edit: n/m I see now you said National

I was going to get a license just to fish with some family this weekend. I wouldn't really fish any other time.

Is there an easy way of finding out where you can legally fish? I'd like to just do it from a river bank or lakeshore.

I saw it in ON first, I am in AB. Then I checked the AB website and the csbc website, looks like this is national wide.

It's been an annual thing for many years now. Used to be a single weekend (2nd weekend of July) but for the last 2 years it's the first full week of July from start of weekend to end of following one. Mark your calenders!!

You can basically fish anywhere that water is unless there are signs that state you cannot fish there. Google MNR zones for rules based on where you are fishing.

You can use Fish ON-Line, It shows all the lakes in Ontario and what fish species are in that water body. Also check the regulations of the zone you are fishing at, as some fish cant be caught.

Make sure you know what fish species are in the location you are fishing and which of those cannot be kept if caught (if you plan on keeping the fish you catch) as well as any size restrictions on kept fish. The MNR will be out those weekends looking for violations - and the penalties can be severe (they can seize any personal property).

just drive 2 hours in any direction and there should be a lake for you. Seriously though, tons of good fishing in the north in and around the muskokas. Beautiful scenery to boot!

Bc had it's free family fishing weekend on june16-18 during the fathers day weekend. Is july1-9 just non tidal water? I'm curious because I fish the Georgia strait and Pacific ocean and it makes no mention of oceans. Just lakes, rivers and streams.

Does that mean I can go crabbing at the pier as well without a license?

Use to do it all the time, but this year didn't renew my license.

Hey guys,

check out Tackle Share these places have rods and tackle that you can borrow! Six mile lake is a great park so taking kids, not too far, small playground/beach and other activities and very active panfish. they have tackle share there as well as some learn to fish programs.http://www.tackleshare.com/loaner-sites/

make sure you check the regulations in the area you are fishing (lake ontario zone 20, most gta zone 16, kawarthas zone 17). Let the big fish go, (they have big fish genes we want passed down and make ALOT more eggs, and they old and taste gross) keep average size fish for eating. and please make sure to clean up when you leave!

Great opportunity to get folks out fishing!

Just be aware of the regulations. Someone posted the link earlier in the thread I believe.

That said, if you are thinking of grabbing some worms and taking a youngster fishing from the bank somewhere all panfish (sunfish, bluegill, perch etc) are in season. Grab a couple rods, bobber and a lunch and head towards the Kawarthas or Muskokas. Just be sure to clean up after yourselves. Good Luck
