I spent a month in Japan last year.. it was a GREAT trip.. I actually had a thread in here asking for places to see/etc. There are soo many things to see.
If you are looking to actually live there, the JET programs seems like a good idea. The only thing is, you could get stuck in some small little town in the middle of nowhere. So, as long as you are open to that, I would say go for it! I would love to do that for a year, but unfortunately I can't just leave my job and do it. (I already left one job and lived in France for a few months)... I would highly suggest living somewhere else for a while. You come to appreciate what you have in Canada so much more and it is a great experience in general.
BTW, great that we have a TRAVEL forum now.. I love travelling whenever i can.

i spent 2 and a half years in japan. you can save money though. it's expensive in terms of transportation and living. but it's really not that expensive if you own a bicycle and not living in tokyo or the kansai area. jobs are pretty easy to come by if you dont mind teaching english.
"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainence" now that is a real boring book. i had to read that in university for english.
