extended warranty worth it for tv purchase?
just wondering if consumers generally get the extended warranty when they buy a tv at futureshop. Does this cover dead pixels?
thanks.

u should buy/read the latest consumer reports on electronics. most lcd tvs averaged 2-3% failure rate among the major brands within warranty period... u make the decision

Don't buy extended warranty, it is a waste of money 99% of the time.
If your tv has dead pixels right out of the box, just return it for another one.

Basically extended warranty from FS is useless. Majority of the time, FS refuses to warrant the item or take a long long long time to do anything about it.
Read the fine print on the extended warranty, I believe the product has to have 3 different problems before they replace it..otherwise theu just send it out to have it repaired...and half the time it comes back still borken or something else is broken or even better yet...lost.

The only Service Plan I would consider is the type where if you don't invoke it during the covered period, you get a store credit for the full amount you paid. The only catch is you have to be organized enough to claim the refund within a narrow specified period. Also, if you do need a minor service, you have to decide whether it's better to pay for it yourself or use the warranty (and then lose all the future credit). Stores that are part of the Audio-Video Unlimited advertising/supply chain have such a Service Plan - there may be others. The pricing of the protection seems to be comparable to the FS/BB type plans.

I like Panasonic's Concierge extended warranty service. You can buy the extended warranty direct from Panasonic anytime up to the expiry date of the 1yr warranty. For my tv I can choose to buy additional coverage as late as Apr/09. 3 quarters into 1yr warranty using my tv, I see no need for extended warranty.

Some VISA credit cards extend your warranty (they double it up to one year) for free.
The RBC Platinum no fee does that. The way I see it, they offer you this freebie because the risk is minimal for them.
As for extended warranties, they're not worth it.
