I watched this program and found it quite sad. We all complain about our lives and our difficulties and then seeing a program like this and I realize that none of my problems even compare.
"Juliana Wetmore is a most extraordinary child. The five-year-old suffers from an extreme condition called Treacher Collins syndrome. Born with a severely deformed face, Juliana has undergone round after round of risky surgery in a bid to rebuild her features and give her the hope of a better life."
Now my next question is - if you found out you were pregnant and the baby had a deformity such as this would you terminate and try again or would you bring the child into this world (and especially our culture) knowing the disadvantage and difficulty the child will have?

I think it would be a favor to the child to terminate such a pregnancy. The parents might think 'oh, we love her, we will support her' and all that but what about the child? she will never live any kind of semblance of a normal life... will be mocked until she is an adult, draw looks wherever she goes.
Odds are she will live at home for the rest of her life and as her brain is fully developed will suffer greatly emotionally...._______________

Back in the old days - it was the midwife's job to take care of deformed babies at birth and tell the mother the baby was stillborn. In the old days this baby would not have survived anyways.
Today we have medical technology that can work wonders - but is it really right to work these wonders? The principal is the same as keeping people alive on machines for years and years rather than let them pass away.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked Cr0at1a for this post.

Yes, absolutely, we would terminate the pregnancy. Before we had kids, my wife and I talked it over and we both agreed that if something was terribly wrong with the fetus, it would have been aborted. Fortunately, everything worked out well for our two kids but I'm real glad that we weren't put in that that horrible position of deciding the fate.

No...the principal is not even in the same ballpark for several very obvious reasons, though if you didn't realize this I doubt explaining them to you would help._______________

When I was in Vietnam in 2007 teaching English at the local universities, one my students was affiliated with the Vietnam Association for the Victims of Agent Orange. An organization that promotes awareness and raises funds for family members who have experienced problems of genetic defects and various types of cancers from Agent Orange.
To be honest, I was unaware of such an organization and had no prior knowledge of this issue. After class one afternoon, she had taken me to a nearby cafe for further discussion on the topic of Agent Orange Victims. She briefly explained that during the great war, the US military would use herbicide and defoliant in its Herbicidial Warefare program.
An estimated 21,136,000 gal. of Agent Orange were sprayed across South Vietnam. 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities, and 500,000 children born with birth defects.

During the war, there's mention that Vietnamese citizens would support self-infliction upon family members with Agent Orange symptoms. Sadly, there would be public display of toture and execution to those who deemed "diseased."
May God have mercy on us all.
EDIT: As for the question on "terminating" a newborn child, I've always been against abortion, regardless of any physical distorted features.Last edited by YoungDr3amer; May 20th, 2009 at 12:38 PM.

It is easy making decisions for other people when you do not have to live in their shoes but would you want to live her life? I would not.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked Cr0at1a for this post.

I would agree and disagree on your statement:
It is deemed simplistic in finalizing a decision based on unknown circumstances, where an individual is not affiliated or cannot express an opinion that would solely affect the victim.
I understand, from a realistic perspective, that the majority of people would be in agreement with your expressed concern that this child would face tremendous hardships and problems throughout her life.
Although, one must understand, articles and threads such being displayed are meant for the general public's awareness and understanding of issues that are not or have not been discussed. Upon discussions and further information, solutions can be formed from knowledgable posts and further understanding from experiences, opinions and facts.
We will always been in need of interesting topics to inspire others, whether or not we influence others to oblige, we may learn something new._______________

If I were the fetus and I had a choice to go through life with this deformity or be terminated, I would be chose to be terminated. Thats why I would terminate my unborn child if i had known he/she has this deformity.
