its called consumer awareness.
why go and pay $50 or $60 bucks for a fake item thinking that is original?
Why do you think the HS850 has so many bad reviews? echo, low volume, bad ergonomics, person can't hear you, crap battery, etc... becuase many of the products are fake - try to only get the US or Canadian versions...
many people are fooled at buying these items and they do no guarantee the warranty.Last edited by staronedirect; Apr 6th, 2006 at 10:22 PM. Reason: addition to message

The best thing is that on that site, the illegal factories will tell you that they sell the Copy of the original - why do you think they have the motorola H3 for $20 or the HS850 for $25. Also, if they were legit sellers how come motorola has authorized so many factories to sell their products? and for such a dirty cheap price.

how to spot a fake
in some cases like the h500 its a matter of
plain chinese writing cardboard blue/orange box (probably fake)
VS
plastic clear box (real)

I guess I'm glad I bought my Moto HS820 from TigerDirect.ca. I know I won't get scammed from there!

Its a bit tricky to know if your getting the original headset but here are a few tips that you can follow to make sure your getting the Original goods:
1) Is the package opened or closed? In many cases, open packages means that they did not come from a OEM or authorized manufacturer. Do not be fooled by sellers that say that they purchased factory stocks and that is why they come opened - There is no such thing. Only authorized dealers can deal w/ the manufacturer and they get them in sealed original retail packages.
2) Are the manuals in English only? or in English and Chinese. I guarantee that any motorola headset you buy coming from China is the fake one - the grey market is too big there and it is so easy to get hands on a fake headset for $5 and sell on ebay or something for $50-$60. Thus, only buy the package w/ US or Canadian manuals only!
3) Ask the seller if the item is coming from an authorized distributor
4) inspect the material of the headset: for the HS850, the fake headsets have a crappy ear hook (in many it was stiff or too maleable).
5) Ask the seller if they give a return policy - This is the best option in order to get back your money in case the headset malfunctions on the first day!
6) Check the quality: do you get loud echo, low volume, digitized voice, battery doesn't last the 6hours talktime promised (fake products usually last 2-3 hours), disconnect problem, does not connect to your BT unit when you get a call, and many many more problems -- NO WONDER MOTOROLA has had crap reviews on all its products!
MY ADVICE TO YOU: ONLY BUY YOUR HEADSETS FROM AN AUTHORIZED US OR CANADIAN DISTRIBUTOR ( OR AT LEAST SOMEONE WHO GETS THESE ITEMS FROM AN AUTHORIZED DEALER - LIKE MYSELF!)
For example: The HS850 retails for $150cad at many retail stores ==> ANYONE WHO SELLS YOU THIS HEADSET FOR LESS THAN $70CAD IS NOT MAKING ANY MONEY WHATSOEVER! ANYONE WHO SELLS YOU THIS HEADSET FOR $50CAD IS LOSING MONEY NOT MAKING! I DEAL WITH ONE OF THE BIGGEST DISTRIBUTORS FOR MOTO IN CHICAGO AND YOU CANNOT GET THE ORIGINAL HS850 FOR LESS THAN $70CAD ANYWHERE!
SO IN THE END MY SINCERE ADVICE TO YOU IS TO BE WISE WHEN YOU PURCHASE AND KNOW THAT YOU ARE GETTING WHAT YOU ARE PROMISED. I TELL YOU IF YOU PAY $90-$100 FOR A HS850 THEN YOU ARE GETTING THE ORIGINAL - BUT PAYING $50 FOR A HEADSET THAT RETAILS FOR $150 MEANS YOU ARE TAKING A CHANCE WITH YOUR MONEY AND WILL DEFINITELY END UP WITH A HEADSET THAT WILL STOP WORKING AFTER 4 MONTHS.
REGARDS,
