File server/Media Center Help.
Hey guys,
So what I'm looking to do is this.
I have an old dell system that I want to use as a mini file server, and as a media center in my room.
I use my laptop daily, but want to be able to access my media from the file server.
Would also be cool to be able to access the file server from outside computers, but not necessary.
I was told to use Linux as my base, run XBMC for my movie/music needs, and to setup an FTP server for the file stuff, only problem being, is I've only used linux about a dozen times, and terminal commands are not my thing.
Do I have other options? Or should I just buckle my seat belt and read?
Thanks,
Wes

Give ubuntu desktop a try. It's probably one of the easiest linux distros to get into. Setting up your file server should be doable using Gnome (the GUI).

If command line is not your thing, then just setup a XP box with file sharing...
Probably the easiest form of file server.

I'm not sure about other platforms but XBMC for the Xbox has a FTP server built-in so you may not even have to install an FTP server. I think just enabling file sharing in Ubuntu would be easier. Hell, just do what I do and run a torrent client on that box.
