Floyd Mayweather Has Booked The MGM Grand For Dates In August

Image
Floyd Mayweather has booked Las Vegas’ MGM Grand for August 26 as the £500 million super-fight with Conor McGregor edges closer to becoming reality.

The fight between five-weight boxing world champion Mayweather or ‘Money’ and UFC lighweight champ McGregor is long-awaited.

Money is an undefeated boxing superstar who has fought at the famous casino venue for the final dozen bouts of his career.

Previously, Mayweather announced he was coming out of retirement specifically to fight the The Notorious:
For Conor McGregor, I’m coming out of retirement — just to fight Conor McGregor.

I don’t want to hear no more excuses about the money [or] about the UFC. Sign the paper with the UFC, so you can fight me in June. Simple and plain. Let’s fight in June.

The fight, which remains unannounced, will be shown on Showtime, Mayweather’s historical broadcaster of choice.

28-year-old Irishman McGregor has not fought since he won the UFC lightweight title last November, and has never boxed professionally having switched to MMA when he was young.

So it seems the date is set for the fight we have all been waiting for.

Report: Mayweather Reserves August 26 Date At MGM Grand

Image
A boxing match between former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and reigning UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor could be happening ‘sooner than you think’, per a report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

To add more fuel to the fire, Mayweather has reserved an August 26, 2017 date at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s event calendar.
Mayweather Promotions will promote a professional boxing event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. This event will be televised on Showtime.

During the tail end of his career, “Money” typically fought at the MGM, making it a likely landing spot for a potential bout between him and the “Notorious” one.
It’s also important to note that the UFC does not have an event booked for that date.

In addition, this new bit of knowledge comes after a recent Instagram post made by McGregor, which the Irishman used to hint that ‘Something BIG is coming’:

@TheNotoriousMMA

McGregor hasn’t competed since last November when he brutally knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 from New York City to become the promotion’s lightweight champion. Since then, he has been out of action due to the birth of his first child.

Mayweather, on the other hand, hasn’t competed since Sept. 2015 when he scored a one-sided decision victory over Andre Berto. He announced his retirement after the bout, but said earlier this year that he was making a return to the ring to fight McGregor.

McGregor doesn't lay a finger - Floyd runs all night while potshotting McGregor while backpeddling (on his backfoot) and shoulder blocking - both fighters take little damage and mucho dinero in their pockets!!!

Floyd is a defensive/evasive fighter and frankly I find his speed and skill beautiful. I know others find it "boring."

This is going to be so much fun.

Exciting fight! I can't see Mayweather losing at all. Even with some ring rust, he'll be too fast for Conor. There isn't even a puncher's chance for Conor imo. His huge left he catches dudes with in MMA is way too telegraphed for someone like Mayweather. He'll see his shoulder roll back and he is already ready to counter. Worst case he does get caught with one, he's got a solid chin.

Still, exciting. Win/Win for Conor. Huge payday for EVERYONE involved. Hoping Conor takes the rest of his MMA career seriously after this spanking.

On paper, Mayweather wins. In reality, Mayweather will win. But I'd still like to argue that Conor has a puncher's chance as anything can happen in a fight.

Looking at the facts...

Mayweather has an enormous skill advantage. When Conor was training kickboxing, Mayweather was training boxing. When Conor was training TDD, Mayweather was training boxing. When Conor was training wrestling, Mayweather was training boxing. When Conor was training jiujitsu, Mayweather was training boxing, and so on so forth. Added Mayweather's history of superior defence, Mayweather outskills Conor 120%. I'd even go as far to say that Conor won't be able to land a clean left hook on Mayweather due to the giant gloves.

BUT..
- Mayweather's been out of the game for a while, even the slightest ringrust can work in Conor's favour.
- Mayweather was a beast at 135lb, but had minimal fights at super welterweight
- Mayweather's aged!
- Mayweather has a history of issues with tall, long-reached, southpaws
- Mayweather has weak fists (fragile hands) so there's minimal chance of him KO'ing Conor, which gives Conor more time and chances to do his thing (if he doesn't gas)
- Conor is coming in MMA-style and not "boxing" (as confirmed by Kavanagh), because instead of learning a new methodology within such a short amount of time, he will keep doing what he already knows best but will do it even better. Mayweather doesn't have experiences against MMA methodologies. It's not really about one being superior than the other, but rather it's not what Mayweather is used to facing. (similarly, traditional boxing is not what Conor is used to facing either).

With that said, I'm excited for the fight and am confident that Mayweather will walk away 50-0 if he doesn't make a mistake, and Conor doesn't get to land his left hook.

Typically I would say every one has a puncher's chance. But I just can't see it here. Where Conor excels with his hands in MMA is not only his strength, but the odd angles he can connect from. Those angles created by takedown faints as well as head/body/leg lick faints. So there goes that. Translated into boxing, similar angles created by someone like Pacquiao, which Money adapted to with ease.

I agree that Money has aged and hasn't fought a whole lot at 154, but when he did it wasn't an issue. He doesn't have knockout power, but will pick Conor apart for 12 rounds. He last fought less than 2 years ago, he will no doubt have some rust. But I just can't see that hampering his typical performance of slip-counter make you look slow AF style.

Always super excited when Money fights. I love fighters who throw hands with no regard, but equally love fighters who have amazing footwork and speed. The build-up is gonna be epic, as Conor has modeled his shit-talking Mayweathers, and to finally have both fighters be able to "talk the talk" will be just as exciting as the fight itself!
