Forgotten Username and Password Mac OS X
I have a friend who's forgotten the password on his ibook G4. I've never used an apple before and was hoping someone may help me out here. Is there a default username in Mac as there is in Windows (administrator)? How can get the password?
Thanks!

Boot from the OS X install CD and select "Reset Password" from the menu.
There is a "root" user on OS X, but logins are disabled by default.

The CD comes with the computer. If not, contact Apple about getting a replacement.
There are no legal versions of OS X that will install on non-Apple hardware.

There are PowerPC versions of Linux and *BSD that will run on that machine. Windows will not (nor will any other x86 OS).

If this is a legitimately purchased machine, wouldn't the OP or his "friend" have contacted Apple already?

I did contact them and based on the SN of the ibook, it is not supported anymore. I do not appreciate your insinuation of whether this is a legitimate machine.
With that said, would I have to purchase the CDs to get this machine back online?

at least for me, I get better response/answer from online forums that specialize in the area. I never call manufacturer.

Perhaps it is just me but how does someone forget something like a laptop password?
And why does it seem your are doing all this for yourself and not your friend? People with iBooks like this usually are usually part of a niche group of somewhat educated mac users. It would be understandable if your friend wasn't good with computers, but if that is the case why did he give it to you to fix when you seem no better equiped to deal with his issue. Are you not doing something he should be doing himself?

Easy if you don't have log in or your OS does not ever crash. I have OS X Panther and I can't recall it ever crashing on me...that being said I had forgotten what I called the machine and was only reminded a couple of days ago when I started up a monitoring application.
