Does anyone have a particular model or company that they like? Am looking for opinions about the free to air service, does a person have to still set up a dish? what kind of channels does one get? is it worth the receiver investment?

Viewsat 2000 Ultra is one I would recommend. You can easily upgrade the firmware via usb. for a list of channels you can get check out http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/index.html. Just select your region for a list of channels you can recieve for free. Yes you will have to setup a satelitte dish and you may have to realign the dish to a different satelitte depending onw hich channels you want to get.

CoolSAT supporter here 100% ... Their 7000 PVR model is absolutely great for the $200 price point, especially when it can do things like record in its internal memory, pause / rewind / FF live TV, and accept an external USB hard disk for maximum time shifting/PVR functionality... I also think CoolSAT's Picture Quality knocks ViewSAT right out of the park.
I own both.

The new boxes from Conaxsat duo/trio are pretty sweet. Tons of features including USB drive PVR support and DIVX playback on the trio. Easy to load new software and scan for sats, etc. I really like mine.
