Thread: Frigidaire Central Vac at Costco for 449.99 (after rebate)

I just installed mine. The on/off switch on the handle does not do anything unless I am using the power head. I would have thought that the on/off switch on the handle would turn everything off, the whole vacuum not just the power head.
Do I have it working properly??

I came across a website earlier today which talks about the on/off switch on those central vac handle.
They said there are two type, the basic one only turn on/off the power head, and the other type have 3-way switch which turn both the main unit and the power head on/off at the same time.
For the basic one, you will have to disconnect the hose to turn off the main unit.
Hope this help.

Anyone know how much is the Hoover one at Costco? I can't find that on the Costco.ca website.
Thanks.

I don't think that it does as it is not intergral to the house (ie you can take it with you when you move):

15. Could you provide me with some examples of eligible and ineligible expenditures?
Yes, some examples are:
Eligible Ineligible
Renovating a kitchen, bathroom or basement
New carpet or hardwood floors
Building an addition, garage, deck, garden/storage shed, fence
Re-shingling a roof
A new furnace, woodstove, boiler, fireplace, water softener or water heater
A new driveway or resurfacing a driveway
Painting of interior or exterior of a house
Window coverings directly attached to the window frame and whose removal would alter the nature of the dwelling
Laying new sod
Swimming Pools (Permanent - in ground and above ground)
Fixtures – lights, fans, etc.
Associated costs such as permits, professional services, equipment rentals and incidental expenses.
Furniture, appliances, and audio and visual electronics
Purchasing of tools
Cleaning carpets
House cleaning
Maintenance contracts (e.g. furnace cleaning, snow removal, lawn care, and pool cleaning)
Financing costs
16. What types of expenditures will not qualify?
The following expenditures will not be eligible for the HRTC:
the cost of routine repairs and maintenance normally performed on an annual or more frequent basis;
expenditures that are not integral to the dwelling, and other indirect expenditures that retain a value independent of the renovation;
expenditures for appliances and audio-visual electronics; and
financing costs.

I saw the CRA examples but it is not clear since above ground Swimming Pools, lights, fans, etc. clearly also retain value independent of the renovation.

Hubby is not great with putting things together. Are these central vacs easy to install for the neophyte?
How much does it cost to hire someone to install a central vac?

Is it alright to install the unit into the basement? We don't have a rough in but it would be quite simple to install it downstairs, compared to trying to route piping through the drywall out to the garage.

Seeing as it's back on sale I'll bump this rather than start a new thread. $150 OFF Frigidaire® Central Vacuum System Electric Kit
Ordered week of March 1, 2010, received on March 9. Opened the box around lunch time on the 10 and returned to Costco by 2:00pm. The accessories, hose and power head appear to be of decent quality, however the same cannot be said for the main unit after removing it from the box. The unit is completely plastic(not necessarily a bad thing, as this should be slightly quieter and lighter) and damage was already apparent. The external switch mount was snapped out of place which I just popped back in. The main exhaust pipe was jammed into the head of the enclosure with the motor out of alignment and one of the springs(one of two or three) that secures the motor had either been broken or had let go and was rattling around inside. Upon further inspection(specifications were minimal on the Costco site) note there is only "one" inlet. No accessory inlet exists for use in the garage. The wand does have a three position switch, but this only controls the power head. The third or off position does not shut the vacuum off. Needless to say I was not impressed and it's definitely not worth the regular price of $599.99. Costco really needs to step up and/or ensure the quality their products if they continue to source non-off-the-shelf products. Extremely disappointed!
