Frustrating product return experience at walmart.
This evening we went to walmart to return a unopened black ink cartridge that my mother in law bought and it was the wrong one.
Anyway. There was 5 people in front of us doing some money transfers things that took like 30 min then there was this guy that had a coffee maker with no box or receipt. He said he bought it 1 week ago and only worked once. They started looking in store to find the item but after like 30 min they told him they could find that product was sold in their store. The return woman asked him how much he paid and he said 50$. So they took a random coffee maker Upc and did the return on a gift card. I was suprised since the coffee maker didnt look 1 week old.
Well now it was our turn after like 1 hour of wait and im not kidding there was other people in line even that one of them asked the return lady to take other customers while they were searching for his coffee maker and she refused.
Anyway. I told her we bought it and it was the wrong ink but we didnt have a receipt so the return lady said no problem ill give you a gift card (like the return policy mention) and i was very happy/ok about that. But then halfway in the return this guy comes over (same guy that approve the other return for the coffee maker) and tell us we cannot return ink without a receipt because its considered electronic. My wife was so pissed because of all the wait time. I didnt even want to argu and left becaue in my opinion this was pure BS.
Im really thinking of calling the store manager tomorow about this because it doesnt make sense.
Anyone had similar experience at walmart?

You should have debated with the service manager without just taking their excuse and leaving. That's pathetic. No point in wasting your time now. When it comes to returning things Wal-Mart is probably the best at it. They never ask for a receipt and give you a gift card no questions asked. It's rare they reject a return or gift card. When it comes down it, Wal-Mart does not give a damn about customer service.

The last time I returned an item at Wal Mart was last month. I told them I bought the wrong one and along with the receipt, they refunded me the amount without any questions asked. It took me less than 5 minutes.

I've only ever had trouble returning things to walmart in Toronto. Certain employees there seem to try to run the returns desk as if it was their own much smaller family run store and try to deny all the returns they can.
I've even returned bags too.

If you didn't have a receipt then they did not even need to entertain your return even if you were within the 14 days that the employee mentioned.
How to Return an Item
In-Store Purchases
Bring the item you wish to return along with all original accessories, packaging and your receipt to a store.
Online Purchases
Returning an item to a store:
1.Bring the item you wish to return along with all original accessories, packing material, and eCommerce receipt.
2.If you do not have the eCommerce receipt, you will need to provide your name, email address, and/or order number, so the store can verify the order information with Customer Service.

Which I'm aware of, but the OP specifically stated that the policy mentions the ability to receive a gift card in lieu of cash without a receipt which, again, the policy does not state at all.
In actuality, like other posters have mentioned, Walmart's real written policy is that they require a receipt for everything (which is why, again, a gift card is never stated). Obviously, they choose to intentionally enforce their policy loosely at their discretion. This is why the OP has no case if he wants to argue technicality.

What is their policy on returning books? The lady at Heartland (Mississauga, ON) was saying something about "copyright law" or some such BS!
