FS: Gateway 15.6" Core i3-330M Gaming Laptop (NV5909H) $699 again.

FYI regular price for this very good entry level gaming laptop is now $699. I am off to buy mine.

I realize there is another thread on this laptop but it is just too big and old for anyone to care.

I bought this laptop and returned after a week.

Here's a brief review.

Pros
- CHEAP!!! You can't get any cheaper for this good performance....
- Good performance
(MW2 is playable(30~40fps) AA x2 and 1156*650 setting.
But at 1280*720, it gives quite a lot of stutter.)
- Nicely built overall. Not much heat. keyboard and touchpad is nice. Simple design. Good texture. Not much finger prints. Good positions of ports.
- 768p Resolution.
- Components are not too low grade. HDD has resonably good speeds and RAM I think it was 1066 Hz, I'm not sure.. but overall, I found components good enough for money.

Some cons are
- it makes high pitch sound constantly (I did not notice it when I put it behind my monitor, but I could hear it when I used it w/o monitor.)
- only 3.8 ram usable. Some other forum guy said this laptop has a problem in BIOS, so it cannot be fixed. (Actually, this machine froze quite a bit when I was playing MW2, esp during loading. Maybe this is why?)
- Gateway... budget brand from Acer which is still a budget brand.
- HDMI connection is weird. I used to watch BOB 720p on 1080p screen with old toshiba laptop that had mobility radeon 3650, and I had no problem. However, this one gives split screen at times (ie not vertically synchronized) with exact same setup (MPC-HC with CoreAVC2). Also, there is some noise interference when you connect to speaker via HDMI.
- can only use graphic driver that is included...

So, yea..
I bought this one instead. Do a search and PM. You can get about $30 cheaper.

Paying extra $80, but I think it's worth it. It's being shipped, so I can't really tell though...

The original thread is only one month old with 89 posts, so I would barely say too old nor too large - that only applies for threads like the rogers retention thread.

I still say its always better to post in an existing thread that start another...

Guys here is my advice, the I3, I5 and I7 are a marketting scam. A good laptop is/will always be over 800 brand new unless you are just using it for email/internet.

the i3 in this system is comparable to the t9500. the i5 chip beats the X9000 core 2 quad mobile chip, and the i7 destroys both the other 2. This also has a very decent video card included.

As someone said before this laptop has some issues (although I don't agree with everything he had to say - likely he was using a 32 bit system for the ram limitation, and saying that its a budget brand isn't a con so much as just a part of buying a budget system.

for $700 this is a whole lot of system. plus when you add taxes it ends up being $800 again anyways.

A laptop only sucks as much as it's user multiplied by how much he overpaid for the brand name.

sweet. the OP is from alerta. I wonder where that is.

*googles it*

interesting.

If I would have gone with the first result, it would be only logical to assume he runs a record-label in Flensburg northern Germany.

Either that or everyone in Alberta is sure on edge these days.
