Thanks. I was looking for a new DVD recorder and was considering another liteon, but I think I will give this one a try as it has decent reviews.
Also there seems to be a firmware update on the Panasonic support site but only a few details on what is updated.

FS Panasonic DVD recorder $199
Futureshop has the DMRES20 DVD recorder on for $100 off the regular price of $299. (so $199 now - but there are only 5 left to order online)
This seems to be a pretty reliable model based on web reviews.
Good deal? I was also looking at the LG 536 for $249.
Any major advantages of one vs the other?

Positive review
Check cnet for a good review of this product:
http://reviews.cnet.com/Panasonic_DM...9.html?tag=tpr
Unfortunately it says it has no "IR blaster", which means that for digital set-top boxes that have only one incoming channel, you need to have the right channel set on the box in order for the recorder to pick up the right program.
At least, that's the way I read it. Maybe a DVD recording expert will chip in here.
P.S. 3 left.

Does anyone know if the discs recorded on this unit can be played on other dvd players?

I have an E80HD....love it....Ram discs work only with Panny players (most) that play Ram. Ram discs are like little Hard Drives. Try and buy in the US.
DVD-r generally plays well on most of the later version DVD players.
I also have an Panny DVD player....saves wear and tear on recorder (allows me to record while watching a disc on a PLAYER only)
Also player is much faster to read and play a disc....than the recorder...at least with my setup.
A HD is VERY nice to have but the RAMS do a good job...if u have enough of them.....and u can always share with another PANNY owner.
US Amyzon price is $150 so this is a good priceLast edited by alkapone; Mar 7th, 2006 at 01:17 PM.

Can you record from VCR to DVD player with this machine? I have a bunch of VHS tapes to transfer onto DVD.

Amyzon.com Product Description
Record your home movies and your favorite TV programs easily to DVD disc with the Panasonic DMR-ES20 progressive scan recorder/player, which can record to write-once DVD+R and DVD-R media or rewritable DVD-RW and DVD-RAM discs (the latter being a great choice for temporary storage of recorded material as it can be rewritten more than DVD-RW). It's easy to record TV programming with the built-in analog TV tuner with RF pass-through and seven-day electronic programming guide (EPG). In addition to standard DVD movie and CD audio discs and its compatible recordable formats, the DMR-ES20 can play back DVD+RW, CD-R/RW, VCD, JPEG, and MP3.
Panasonic's Time Slip function consists of two features designed to give you added flexibility and control when making DVD recordings: Chasing Playback and Simultaneous Record & Play. With Chasing Playback, you don't have to wait for an entire program to be recorded before watching it from beginning to end. This feature allows you to watch a program that's currently being recorded from any point that's already been recorded--while continuing to record the live program in progress. Simultaneous Record & Play allows you to record a program onto a disc while simultaneously watching any other program that's previously been recorded on the same disc.
You can set your recorder to one of five different recording speeds, each varying in recording quality and length. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP & SP modes provide less recording time with higher quality recording, and XP mode gives you the highest quality recording. There's also the FR (Flexible Recording) mode that lets you record with the best picture quality possible for the recording time and remaining space on the disc._______________

This is the place to find out all about these Panasonics and other competing models:

(most active DVD Recorders forum)
Keep in mind that almost all DVD recorders comply with copy protection rules, i.e., they will not copy a commercial VHS tape or DVD source with Macrovision copy protection. Some premium cable and satellite channels are also now starting to use the same copy protection to prevent DVD copying, most notably HBO (but not so far in Canada as far as I know).

Going to have to cancel my order with FS as I just found out that there is no Chapters (Chaptering?) available for DVDR (only DVD-RAM!). Read it first on Cnet then I downloaded the manual to confirm.
Not for me._______________

When you finalize a disk at the end, it will create chapters every 5 minutes.

If the ES20 is like the ES10 it replaces, then it will automatically create a new chapter every 5 minutes when you finalize a DVD-R.

So this device won't back up DVD movies?
Any reason NOT to use a DVD burner with software like AnyDVD and DVDClone?
Like to hear what others are using this for, thanks?
