I followed some instructions here online and it worked, got the unlock code.

download the universal rooting file put on microusb and insert into phone.
power off, turn on phone by power and home button. apply update via usb.
note I didn't use s.chan's as it was corrupt. So I found a universal root file at xda.

install samsung keiss on pc so that it installs the samsung usb driver. (this caused my floppy drive to continuous search, so after unlock, I uninstalled it)
I already had android sdk since I unlocked my nexus s myself.

then run android terminal emulator
follow the instructions on s.chan
elect-merged-zellers-prepaid-samsung-gi ... st13339850

reboot and enter code to unlock network. done.

works just fine. no issues. took me 30 mins because I had to download and install samsung keiss.
this phone was for my dad. It's not as fast, but it was very responsive touchpad which is good.
excellent replacement for lg chocolate 2, which is a POS. It will be for put up for sale for cheaps if anyone wants it.

edit: no custom rom put in, left it simple for dad.

I just picked up the phone as well. After plenty of searching I found the necessary links and successfully rooted and unlocked my phone =)

Use this resource to root the phone (Note: only follow the "rooting the phone" section): elect-merged-zellers-prepaid-samsung-gi ... st13339850

Use these links to safely find the unlock code (both links describe the same method):

*edit* I forgot to mention parts of it can be a bit tricky if you're not used to reading a HEX editor, just post if you have any questions. From what I understand this method only copies a file from the phone, instead of the other method. Either way thanks OP! I missed the zellers sale but managed to jump on this one :D

So many links, so many pages ... is there a kind soul to post a how-to-dummy on unlocking this phone, without links after links :) . like post a direct link on rooting (though I have rooted mine) but the unlocking is a little bit confusing with everyone saying that method is not safe and this one is good. there was one post complete with some picture and what to expect during the process.
A million thanks! ;)

Ok, I'm lost at the "ADB" part.

I've accomplished Step 1 (ie. Root the phone using S.Chan's guide).

I tried to follow this tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502010) but I'm stuck. I have already installed the Gio drivers on my PC using Kies. Thus, I cannot manually install the adb driver when prompted. What should I do? How can I uninstall the Gio drivers and put the adb drivers?

There was a rumor in the Zellers thread that Samsung was coming out newer version of this phone later this fall with a 1Ghz processor and AMOLED display

BTW, a new version of the Spirit FM radio app came out today that fixes the bugs so it runs properly on the Gio. This app restores the stock FM radio function that Bell/Samsung removed from thier version of this phone. Your Bell Gio must be rooted to run this app

ah ok thanks for the info

Try this link for installing the ADB but don't use the stl5 method for unlocking'

If you don't want to install any thing to your PC, you can actually run a SSH server on your phone, grant it the root access and then use a terminal app to submit all the commands, then bring the SD card to your PC the read the image file.

This is the method I used to unlock my phone. The process was a bit confusing for me because I am new to rooting and Android, so I thought I would put together this step-by-step guide in case anyone else also needs help with the process.

The steps below are basically a summary of the rooting method found on XDA developers forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=1192122) and S.Chan's post (http://forums.redflagdeals.com/elect-me ... st13339850), and the BML unlocking method described here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpos ... tcount=334)

Note - I used a Windows XP, SP3 computer to unlock my phone.

Warning - please be careful when you do this process, I am not responsible if anything happens to your phone!!!!!!

Time Required to Complete:
* If you DONT have android SDK installed: 1 or 2 hours (its slow to download and install)
* If you DO have android SDK installed: 10-15 min

PREREQUISITES

You will need these materials:
 1. USB cable (comes in the Bell box)
 2. SD card (comes in the Bell box)
 3. The simcard you want your phone to work with (eg: Rogers, Fido simcard)
You will need this software installed on your computer:

1. Android SDK
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

The only tool you will use from the SDK is the adb.exe (Android Debug Bridge). This lets you connect to your phone from your computer using a USB cable.

Android SDK takes a REALLY long time to download, and all you need is the platform-tools component:

NOTE1 - Android SDK needs the Java SE Developer Kit to work properly. You can download it here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/ ... 32154.html

2. A Hex editor (I used HxD)
http://mh-nexus.de/en/downloads.php?product=HxD

Part 1 - Before your Begin

1. Charge your phone to full
2. DO NOT put a sim card in the phone
3. Turn OFF the phone.

Part 2 - Root the Phone

To root the phone, I followed step #2 from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=1192122).

1. Insert the SD card into your computer.

2. Download UNIVERSAL_GB_ROOT.zip
http://www.gamefront.com/files/20753436 ... B_ROOT.zip

3. COPY the Universal_Gb_Root.zip file onto your SD card. (Do NOT unzip the file! Just copy the whole thing to the SD card)

4. REMOVE the SD card from your computer, and INSERT it into your phone.

5. Hold the HOME and POWER buttons on your phone (this will start Recovery Mode)

6. Using the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, highlight the “apply update from sdcard” option. Press the HOME button to select it.

7. Choose the Universal_GB_ROOT.zip file and press the HOME button to apply it.

8. You will see a message that says

Code: Select all

Rooting Complete!
Enjoy :)

Install from sdcard complete.
9. Use the VOLUME UP and VOLUME down buttons to select: “reboot system now”.
Your phone should restart.

10. Confirm that you have the Super User application icon in your applications menu. By default, it appears on the last page.

If you see the Super user application, your phone should be rooted!

Part 3 - Find your Unlock Code

This section is basically the same as (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpos ... tcount=334), but with screenshots!

In this part, you will need to use the Android Debug Bridge (adb.exe) program to copy a file from your phone to your computer. You need to install the Android SDK in order to get adb.exe.

Before you do the steps below, make sure:
* Your SD card is still in your phone
* Your phone's screen is ON and UNLOCKED

* You have a hex editor installed
* You have the Android SDK installed (specifically, you need to know where the adb.exe file is!)

Also not sure if this step is necessary, but I put my phone into Flight mode. (this turns off all the wireless connections - GPS/Wifi/Bluetooth). If you hold down the POWER button, there is an option to turn on FLIGHT MODE

0. Connect your phone to the computer via the USB cable. At this point, my computer (Windows) automatically began installing a bunch of Samsung drivers. I let Windows completely finish installing drivers before continuing. (If for some reason your computer doesn't recognize that your phone is connected, you may need to download Samsung Kies to get the latest USB drivers)

1. In Windows, open a Command prompt window by going to Start -> Run -> cmd.exe

2. Navigate to the folder containing adb.exe. On my computer, adb.exe was installed here:

C:\Android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools

(This will be different on your computer!)

When you get to that folder, type:

Code: Select all

adb shell
This should connect your phone to your computer.

3. At this point, it is VERY IMPORTANT to make sure your phone screen is ON and UNLOCKED. Pay attention to your phone’s screen during these next steps!

4. Type

Code: Select all

su
5. Look at your phone! It should look like this:

6. Press ALLOW, and then your phone should popup a message that says "Unknown has been granted Superuser permissions"

7. Now look at your computer again. Your command prompt should look like this:

You are now logged into your phone as a super user.

8. Type:

Code: Select all

cat /dev/bml5>/sdcard/bml5.img
This will copy a file to the phone’s SD card.

9. Type:

Code: Select all

exit
This logs you off from being a superuser.

10. Type it again (yes, you are typing "exit" 2 times):

Code: Select all

exit
This disconnects you from the phone.

11. Type:

Code: Select all

adb pull /sdcard/bml5.img
This copies the bml5.img file from the SD card onto your computer's hard drive.

For your reference, this is what your command prompt screen should look like after you type in all those commands:

12. Open your Hex Editor (I used HxD -- download it here: http://mh-nexus.de/en/downloads.php?product=HxD)

13. In the Hex Editor, open the bml5.img file. (This file should be on your hard drive in whatever folder you ran step 11 in)

Your screen should look something like this:

14. Now you want to search for this string:

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 05 FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF

Make sure your hex editor is searching for HEX values – see the screenshots below:

15. After you find the string, you will see the search string followed by a lot of FFs

16. Scroll down past all the FFs until you find a 8 digit number

This 8-digit number is your unlock code! Write it down! (in the image above, the unlock code = 46012158)

Part 4 - Unlock that phone!

1. Insert your sim card (eg: Rogers, Fido simcard) into the phone.
2. Turn the phone on.
3. If you try to dial a number, you will get to a screen where it tells you the phone is locked.
4. Enter the 8 digit number from step 16 above and press unlock!

(Note - you have to press on the textbox to make the keyboard appear)

5. Voila, your phone should be unlocked!

Thanks to all the people on RFD and XDA developers forums for their info! Couldn't have done this without them!

Part 2 - Root the Phone

To root the phone, I followed step #2 from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=1192122).

1. Insert the sim card into your computer.

2. Download UNIVERSAL_GB_ROOT.zip

How do I insert the SIM card into my computer? Do you mean SD card?
