Any buddy that handles your CC# can steal it. The payment card industry can force as much encryption and technological safe guards as they like, as soon as a human is able to physically see or hear that number it's a potential breach.

Futureshop phone agent stole my credit card number?
I think a call center employee for futureshop may have stolen my credit card number!
Long story short, I ordered about $2700 of TV's for work, using the company credit card. This failed their card verification and I had to call them to update the information. Couldn't get the company card to work, so I gave the agent my personal card info. (This was on Feb 6th)
Next day I get a call from TD saying there's been some odd activity on my account.. some Kijiji stuff and a hotel. Definitely not me! I haven't used the card for much else recently except to pay phone bills, and that was more than a week ago.
Not too pissed as I'm not actually out any money, just inconvenienced, but has anyone ever heard of this happening?

Most likely just a coincidence, more than anything else. Without any proof, you can't really point the finger one way or another.

I've heard of dishonest employees stealing CC info.
If it was the FS employee who stole your card number and used it themselves, they are exceptionally stupid, as bank will investigate the last place you legitimately used the card first.
It happened to one of my co-workers at her former workplace. She initially swore up and down it must have been a drugstore cosmetician who "held onto her credit card to check the signatures a suspiciously long time", and told her bank that when she saw the charges.
It turned out, 2 weeks later, to be an employee in her office who had took down her CC info when she left her purse unattended in her office.

Weird. Cc companies never tell you the details of a stolen card.
The most I got from one is what type of store it was used at and approximate location.
I asked if I could all later to find out who it might have been. The rep said no. They are not allowed to give that info

Interestingly enough I bought stuff from Dell via GCR. It was the first time I had to use this "SecureCode for MC"
Got my GCR credit however the cc was never charged from dell
2 months later the card is flagged as compromised
3-4 months later now dell is calling and emailing me that the payment wasn't authorized...yet they shipped me the item

Probably a bad coincidence, though it is easy to accuse the person in this case due to the timing.
Unfortunately we will likely never know how it happened. Just be thankful that the unauthorized charges were caught early._______________

I used to work for some call centres, dealing with quite a bit of purchases. I get quite a lot of credit card #'s in a day for the purchases, we weren't allowed to bring in camera, or walk out with anything. However, obviously there were ways which you could get around that. I wouldn't doubt that some would consider doing such a thing. I (oh we're all evil) considered it at one point, but thought it wasn't worth getting in **** and leaving work without peace of mind. Dodged that one! From that experience on, I swore never to give my CC# over the phone and if I could pay and avoid giving out the #.. I would!
