When entering the highway, get out of the onramp lane as quick as possible. When I did my test, I sped up to about 80 or so, then switched lanes (there were no cars around anyway) and the lady told me to change lanes ASAP, rather than waiting to get up to speed.
She said if you wait you may lose the opportunity to merge safely.
It sounds dumb to me, because as a driver, I know whether I need to merge ASAP or whether I can wait a while longer and pick up speed. If the road is packed solid, I will get over ASAP, if it's not, I take my time. But they go by black and white rules, just like every other gov't agency, and we all know black and white isn't realistic.
