Yes, the game companies are trying to kill the used game market. The game companies don't find it a big of a deal if you buy a game, beat it, then past it on to a friend. The game companies real problem is this, those game trading companies like Futureshop/EBgames etc...
They bring the prices of the games down. The publishers has no choice but to lower their new games prices after a few weeks, good for me because I don't like to buy used games. Meanwhile if they don't do it, the used game companies just take profit off the top each time the game is traded.
I don't find it buying a game new or not being able to buy used. Some games would rather the money be made by the developers, so they have enough revenues to invest into future title. Not the current system, where the 2nd hand game trading companies are making a kill by not producing anything. Hence, taking away the developers potential profits (also game develop is getting expensive).
Also, before anyone smack me for my post. I don't agree with shady publishers/developers offering us limited content than charge us for DLC to complete a game I already paid for.

Considering some of the crap they are releasing nowadays - I would say that would apply to *NEW* games as well.
(eg., Dragon Age II)
