They don't sell LifeTime Updates seperately. You must buy it with the GPS
You can buy updated maps for $80

Garmin Lifetime Update
I have a Garmin 1390T that's about 2 years old. Does anyone know where is the cheapest place to get a lifetime map update card? Or, is it better to buy a brand new one that comes with lifetime map updates for $149 from Costco.

Don't buy a new GPS, if it is still working good, why buy another one ? overconsumption is badLast edited by mroy19; Feb 8th, 2012 at 10:34 PM.

2 years old is nothing. The nav in my car is from 2004 and for the most part it still works.
Why bother with a map update purchase when you can get a brand new 1490LMT for around $159.99 at Costco.

Checkout GPS City for $80, I purchased the Life Time Maps from them a couple of years ago.

Excessive GPS prices
I had a Nuvi 750 and from Garmin's web site I could buy lifetime North America map updates. The version of the European maps had updates for a year, then it started nagging me that my maps were out of date. There wasn't an option for lifetime European map updates, at least on Garmin's site. I could only buy a lifetime update for the maps that came installed when I bought my Garmin, but not for add on maps, as far as I could determine.
I now have a 2555 LMT (thanks to RF for pointing out the Canadian Tire coupon!). So I have lifetime maps and traffic for North America but again, but Garmin says I can only buy a one year Europe map, not a lifetime version.
GPSCity has lifetime updates for Europe available, but you have to have the Europe maps already installed, so it pretty much doubles the cost of the add on map. There's also the risk of it not actually working, since Garmin ties updates very carefully to your serial number. I might as well buy a Garmin in Europe next time I'm travelling there!
There are "world traveller" versions with lifetime maps (and traffic) for North America and Europe, but the cost is bundled into the price. They're $250 or more.
I'm hoping that smartphones and Google mapping will cause GPS prices to crash.

+1 on buying a new one. Buy it when on sale and price-match like any diligent RFDer here

I bought 1490LMT ($140) and the map update is a joke. Absolutely unnecessary for any 2-3 yr old GPS. I do it anyways on a microSD so it won't screw up anything.

Maps updates
You can download the latest Garmin maps anytime you want for free.
It's called a TORRENT download. I won't mention any site names,
but you can go to any good torrent site and find Garmin & TomTom maps.
