Get this message when I log in to MSN

So everytime I log into msn I keep getting this message:

Important service announcement: As part of a recent system enhancement, we need you to change your e-mail address to continue signing in to the Windows Live(TM) Messenger Service.

To ensure that your access is not blocked and to learn more, go to http://support.microsoft.com/gp/Messenger/en

I went on the website...tried changing my ID, but it doesn't let me

Live Messenger runs on your computer. Why not look in the COMPUTERS and electronics section?

Got the same message, tried to change ID... never worked.

Don't click on the link on the page it directs you to change your password, if you did chances are you were phised.

Look carefully at the url it directs you to. MSN wouldn't ask you to change your email address in an instant message.

I was just about to make a thread about this but you posted it first. I think it is spam for stealing information or something. I wouldn't trust this.

No it's not a phishing site, as far as I can tell. It clearly said "microsoft.com/" on the address bar. Although I did find it odd for that message to appear.

Well, I registered for a new e-mail address a few years ago, it was right when they allowed the "dash" or "minus" character to be included in e-mail addresses. So my e-mail was XXXXX- and after I got it, I had a lot of trouble with websites not accepting it because of the - character.

I still have trouble sometimes signing up for contests and stuff, because they don't recognise that character.

Microsoft sent it by accident.

Earlier today, Messenger customers may have received an instant message that looked like this:

We sincerely apologize, but this was accidentally sent out. If you received this notification today, please ignore it. You will be able to continue to use your current e-mail address, and there is no reason to make any changes.

If you have already clicked the link, there is no harm to you. You should have been told that your “Windows Live ID can’t be changed at this time” because there is no need for the change.

These service notifications are only used for urgent issues but unfortunately, somebody made a mistake that caused this message to be sent out. We will definitely be reviewing our process to make sure we avoid such mistakes in the future.

Again, we’re very sorry for any confusion that may have been caused.
