I have an unlocked Koodo Nexus S. I noticed that when using certain wifi hotspots, I cannot access voip (e.g., Dell Voice/Fongo) or use Opera mobile. I understand that if I root the phone and install a proxy utility, I can get around this problem. Are there solutions for unrooted phones?

With a VPN, you are essentially logged into someone else's network. All traffic goes through their servers, and then gets relayed to you via the VPN tunnel, thus negating the worry for "open ports". As long as the VPN you are connected to have the required ports open, the information will reach you.
