Getting rid of uTorrent and all associated activities
I'm very computer illiterate so please be nice!!
I inherited a laptop directly from my brother. He has uTorrent and movies he downloaded using that program on there. How should I delete things so that I am not downloading or sharing files anymore? Every time I open uTorrent, there is still activity going on (as indicated by the stat bar on the bottom of the window). Should I just delete the uTorrent.exe file? Do I also need to delete the movies downloaded using uTorrent?
I don't plan on downloading or sharing any files over the internet. I'm afraid if I delete the uTorrent file, I will still be uploading to people.
Thanks.

Well there should be a stop button for every torrent that's moving on screen. Otherwise you could just remove the program and yes it will stop sharing.

yeah just uninstall the program competelly if u dont plan on using it ever urself.
go to: Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs-> find uTorrent in there, and click on remove.
that should uninstall it for good.
also u can make sure the thing doesnt start everytime when u turn on windows.
click: Start->Run..->type in "msconfig" (without the " signs)-> go to the startup tab-> and u can pretty much check disable all and it will make sure u have no programs starting when u boot up windows.
the only program u might wanna leave on startup would be ur antivirus program.

thanks. I just deleted the uTorrent exe.file on my desktop which you click to launch it (it's not actually a program, I don't think, because I can't find it under add/remove programs and it wasn't in the program list that comes up when you click the start menu). I also did a simple search for files with 'torrent' and deleted everything that came up.
Sounds good? everything seems okay so far. Thanks again.

I think all it does is keep a folder in %AppData%.
As in... C:\Documents and Settings\--your user name--\Application Data\

uTorrent
uTorrent (pronounced as MicroTorrent) does not have an installer, so there is no add / remove entry. It does not modify the registry. All you have to do is delete the executable.
As JollyEskimo mentioned, all it does is save its files in \Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data
Chances are, the unfinished downloads are still there.

I inherited a laptop directly from my brother.
Side note, this may be a good time to learn how to install Windows or get someone else to do it. Best to start fresh to avoid also inheriting some of the problems he may have created in Windows. Inheriting someone else's OS is like wearing their underwear (well, okay, not quite as bad).

Lets say it is closer to buying a used car. You don't know how the previous owner treated the car. You don't know if it was in an accident and you don't know how well it really runs.

It only installs two files though, the .exe and uninstall files.

Really?
I didn't know they released one with an installer? I hope the stand alone is still available.
An installer would create registry entries for the uninstall process. Basically a key that points back to the uninstall program.
