Was going to buy used but I'm told to buy new

I was looking into buying an 06 GMC Canyon ranging from $12k-$17K. My parents are telling me to buy new for a few reasons. With everything thats going on I can get a good deal on a new also have no problems, longer warrenty, etc. But with buying used you may have hidden problems or soon to be problems.

If i do buy new it will either be a 09 GMC Canyon or 09 GMC Sierra

But for me I'm more worried about my insurance as I'll already be paying a fair bit with an 06. I wont dare to think what it may be. I was told it may just be slightly higher. But I priced a 2wd to a 4wd and there is a $1000 mark up with the 4x4. So that goes to show why i'm worried with an 09. haha I'm going to get a quote on an 09 anyway just to see.

So I was posting this to see what other members would say about buying new to a used?

How much would you say they would go for? I'm told car sales are slow so they are willing to do what ever. Maybe 5k? Plus mayb an extra 1000 for my trade in?

If you're going to spend $30k check out Toyota and Nissan. With the state of GM you never know what the value will be like down the road.

Toyota are good trucks but I just don't like their look and thats what stops me from buying one. And Nissan pick ups I wouldnt touch. Ever.

It's not about GM going down the drain, it's about resale value and reliability.

If used is around 12k and new is around 35k, I suggest you go and buy used, but make sure they have detailed service record. (preferably with factory extended warranty). I just don't see how you would spend 20k on fixing for buying a used truck.

I don't know anything about that vehicle. Do your research. The best way to negotiate is to know, as best you can, what the truck costs them. Get out of admin fees and reduce the PDI if you can. Do your research before talking to a salesman about price.

So you have a new truck for $35k OR a used 06 model used for $12-17K (split the diff and call it $15k) ... and you plan on driving it into the ground which means say 15 years.

so ... you could

• get 1 vehicle for $35k that lasts 15 years OR
• buy one vehicle for $15k that lasts another 12 years THEN go buy another 3 year old vehicle in 2019 that last another 12 years AND have 20k to invest for 12 years then 5K to invest forever ....

Hmmm ... one vehicle for 15 years or two vehicles for 24 years + 5 grand in your pocket ... hmmmm ... personally eat the depreciation or let somebody else do it ... hmmmmm

my mentality is if you're knowledgeable with cars (or trucks) and want to save money, then buy used.
If you're a total n00b or if you're ballin', buy new.

I say you wait for march, as GM will increase the incentives if looking new.

Why not look at a Ford Ranger? but than again ford/gm spent their coin on Silverados/Sierra and F150.

PS: I just noticed, why are you looking at a Sierra vs Canyon??? two different classes?

Anyways, buying used would make more sense, and 5yrs/160k km powertrain warranty will cover you for 2-3yrs more given it is a 06 or 07 model. Mechanically, no vehicle has any issues any more, and worst case, GM cars are cheap to fix.
