Or I need to get some US dollars.

It depends on the state. New York will take Canadian money at the manned booths but New York is a border state. Further south you will need American money.
You don't need a passport to use the toll roads in the United States. You just need a Canadian passport or enhanced driver's license to get into the States.

Edls work for driving, buses, or ferries to the usa. Just not flights. I use it all the time.

i just got bk frm CT via Mass. and NY Thruway... there's a 5% surcharge on CAD $ but yes, they accept it.
Mass. wasnt charging for tolls as roads are under construction, i guess...
and you need a passport to cross the border just to be safe...

Enhanced Driver Licences became acceptable proof of citizenship as of June 1, 2009 for U.S. land and sea points of entry.
Not all provinces issue EDL's yet.
You really only have 2 options (EDL or Cdn. Passport) unless you want to spend time and money at the U.S. border filling out a form.
For returning to Canada by road, there are at least 3 straightforward options (NEXUS, EDL or Cdn. Passport). Any other proof of citizenship may take more time.
