What does the heritage of the aboriginal people of Canada have to do with Canadian heritage? The native people of Canada were here first but their heritage isn't Canadian heritage.
Canada is a British and French country based on British and French laws, culture, and morals. However, as Canadians, we are accepting of all cultures and make adjustments to our own culture to incorporate the diversity of our friends and neighbours. Saying "Gong Hai Fat Choi" would be very Canadian, complaining about it not meaning "Happy New Year" is not.
Oh and I'm not Chinese but I'll say "Gong Hai Fat Choi" to my Chinese friends eventhough I know it doesn't mean "Happy New Year" in the same way that they'll say "Happy Holidays" knowing it's not the same as "Merry Christmas".

Hi! Thanks, quite informative, though I'll continue to use the standard greeting as the Chinese party crowd don't seem to time the changeover to the second as Anglo-Saxon people do. I have learned some of the language as my closest friend is of Chinese descent; it's an incredibly difficult language to master! The writer William S. Burroughs criticized modern English as imprecise and open to interpretation. He'd have a field day with many Asian languages. Perhaps you could add some phonetic spelling so people don't sound silly if they insist on trying it.
I'm unapologetic as an Anglo-Saxon so.... Happy New Year! Rock on!
PS, I'm a sheep. Baahaaahaa!

This reminds of the thread a while back where the guy was upset because someone said "Bless You" to him when he sneezed.
Mandarin told me to say Gung Hay Fat Choy, and why would someone with such a yummy buffet lie to me??!?!??

This thread is ridiculous! Why is the OP so angry?
When someone you meet asks you, "How do you do?", they don't want to hear what happened in your day, your family and money troubles, etc. It is a saying that means "hello". Should I respond with, "It's none of your business?"_______________

"I would prefer even to fail with honor than to win by cheating" (Sophocles). But an honourable win over a cheater's fail? Best.

When I was a kid growing up in Agincourt, my Chinese friends told me that the best way to pronounce it was "De-Oh Lay Noo Moah".
So I did... to just about every Chinese person I ran into. And they always got upset and started going off on me!
Never quite understood why.

Choose one of my responses. They all fit very well.
a) In other news local Chinese boy shakes fist at the sky.
b) Stupid thread is stupid.
c) Gong hei fat choi to you, NOT!
d) Get off my internets!_______________
