I like the sturdiness of the Metro grocery recycle bags but I dont like their appearance.
Are there any good looking sturdy recycle bags out there?

I don't shop there but Metro bags are my fave. They're sturdy, wide, hold up to 50 lbs. and I like all their many colours. I especially like that one set of handles aren't too long. Two I have, Whole Foods and some other one, have long handles so when I'm carrying a full bag, the bag meets the ground. I don't use them anymore because of this.
I think the bags from Whole Foods are attractive though, also sturdy and roomy and have an eco look to them in a nice soft green with a tree on them. You might like those?Last edited by okaywithme; Jun 30th, 2010 at 08:08 PM.

I like the Metro one too because it's large and fits a lot, and can toss it over my shoulder in a pinch. But, I agree, it's too busy. If you don't like the look of it, have you looked at the large PC one? It's the same as the regular sized-one, just larger. If you don't like the green image on it, just turn it over. The Whole Foods one is nice too, I agree. I have some, but because I have to carry it and not put it over my shoulder, I rarely use it.
OP are you looking for any reusable bag or a specific style? Like the one that fold up into a pouch and you can put it in your pocket? Or any bag? If you can clarify, I can help you some more.

Whichever you use, just remember to sanitize them after every use. There was a piece on the Global news the other night about the contamination issue with reusables. Their advice, wash them out after each use. Label one that is used for meat only, one for produce. Cross contamination is a big problem with these bags if they aren't properly washed after each use. Depending on the material of the bag, either throw them in the laundry or properly wash them out with hot water and soap.

Reuseable shopping bags, not recycling bags. lol
I like the original ones from Sobeys, blueberry pattern.
We bought a few mainly because Sobeys is one of the few companies that will replace them if they rip or the handles come off.
There were a few delivered with company advertising on them and we use those too but they're not as plasticized.
I don't put meat in these bags, due to the yuck factor, just buy/reuse plastic bags.
We use them only for canned goods, produce, bakery etc., not washing those out, although I probably should.....

I don't get the meat part. May be the usual way I buy meat from supermarket is different. Is meat already packaged with wrap or plastic bag by the meat section?

Even wrapped, meat packages are laden with ecoli and other dangerous bacteria.
I either buy a bag for the meat or put it in a produce bag.....carry it to the car where I keep old plastic bags.
If you put meat trays into the bags they often leak blood and that's my yuck factor. Ewww.

I've been using the recyclable bags since introduced. I like all food items to go into the bag and place meat at the bottom face up first. No leakage and no contamination to date
.
I'm also careful not to choose meats that have leaked through their wrap.Last edited by okaywithme; Jul 2nd, 2010 at 04:28 PM.

Suggestion then, bag it in a produce bag cause the meat dept people don't wash their hands when after wrapping each tray.
They do wash their hands between 'types' of meat but not for each package, therefore contamination is high risk.
Some stores make them wear gloves but they don't change gloves between packages either.
Any 'leakage' of bacteria cannot be seen, Ecoli and all the other crud in meat is not visible to the naked eye.
Most stores provide produce type bags in the meat dept for exactly that reason.
Just think of the damage from undercooked hamburger and multiply it!!

What about M&M
I like the bags that M&M sells for reusable grocery carrier. It has a handle just the right length and it allows you to close the top to keep in cool air. It is insulated to a degree and the colours are nice.
