If you're doing graphics work, I've heard many people with positive experiences with Sony CRTs. I've also heard some great things about NEC. Obviously you won't be getting another Viewsonic! I can't say that I'm surprised in the least, I've had my fair share of Viewsonic incidents... hopefully you weren't hurt!
If you decide to go the LCD route, be prepared to spend upwards of $1000 on an LCD with good colour representation.

just what tweaker said - you can't go wrong getting a monitor with a sony trinitron\diamondtron tube. Im using Nec FE700+, it cost a fortune when I bought it but that was ~5yrs ago and it's still spectacular and worth every penny. Much better quality than any LCD I've ever seen and also a step above every CRT I've seen except a few.
Most cheaper budget CRTs like Samsung 753DF will not give you a consitent plain colour, any pure colour surface will look grainy, like an LCD.
However, if you're doing pre-press you need a better colour accuracy than what a consumer-level monitor can offer you. So look for a LaCie Electorn Blue or something if you can afford it.

I have the 997MB that you were looking at and I used it while I was in my final year of the York/Sheridan Bachelor of Design program. It suited me well, so it should for you.
Although If i could afford it I'd rather spend extra money on a really good monitor. You could always get a apple cinema display monitor. or the Dell 2005 20" wide LCD which is what I also use and have read that is comparable to the apple 20" cinema display
