But what good is it if no stores in Canada accept it yet?

It's a virtual paypass card for phones like the Galaxy Nexus! It works anywhere with paypass.
Mods: Please move this to Cell Phones!

Since it hasn't been officially allowed, will you still get zero-liability protection?

It's pretty official if it lets me put my Canadian billing address in the Google Wallet website. It was only when I registered on the app I used NY as the state and a random zip code from New York. Then I changed everything back on the wallet site to reflect the proper billing address.

I heard it only works on Touchwiz. Maybe there is a version for AOKP. Look it up! I'm going to head out and test this virtual paypass.
It was an accidental discovery because I figured that since it said that it accepted all major credit cards in the new update I punched in my card and low and behold it worked!

its official when google says "canadian devices are eligible" and OTA an update to the phone or OEM release the feature.
until then using back methods developed by some pimply kid in his moms basement is asking for id theft.

This isn't a back method. All you do is spoof it as T-Mobile USA and it magically works. If you were to roam on t-mobile in the states and happen to punch in your credit card number after downloading this app it would work.

I think the danger is only in them closing up the spoof that lets this work. All the google wallet stuff is still done through google, you add your cards online (they autoadd the one you use in the play store). The only "hack" used is that you spoof an american network. And if you think google is sending unencrypted credit info over cellular you're nuts. It's all done backend in their servers now, so there's nothing to steal. The new revision processes every transaction as a "google wallet purchase" while google pays the merchant themselves, that's why they can connect to pretty much any credit card now.
