Government rebates restricted by country of manufacture

I see all these energy rebates which are subsidized purchases and are actually mostly taxpayer funded. Should we start restricting these to some extant?

Have your say in this Today!

Nope. We'll be stuck driving crappy cars. We are a
mostly free market economy and not Soviet Russia

Let people decide what cars they want to buy

in Freemarkets rebates dont apply. This is a subsidy, not a free market item.

In effect it'll be same. Terrible idea unless you like paying 10x higher prices while benefiting another country

Rebates for things like ev or LED bulbs are different as we get a direct benefit from it and no different than spending on roads or schools.

But why should govt give a rebate on say an overpriced US made pos when I can get better quality one from elsewhere?

thread is about direct subsidy on purchase. its not about direct benefit. I would argue it should only be made in Canada but that's too restrictive,
Well customer would be able to choose what they want to buy still if they want overprices US made POS, why stop them.

Countries which have gone thru the process of negotiating an agreement should get benefit.
