Under the new Ontario law (since they don't mount to the dash), is it legal to use your GPS with one of these while driving?

Yes, dash or otherwise mounted. They fixed a little bit of the law.

Which electronic devices will still be permitted under the new law?
...
"a global positioning system (GPS) device that is properly secured to the dashboard or another accessible place in the vehicle"
Personally, I secure mine to the window as low as possible just to the left of the gauges. This way my GPS blocks no view at all. If I were to secure it to the dashboard in the center like the gov't originally thought of, I would lose a LOT of view, so I verified this against the text of the law itself (which, technically, bans car radios!):
http://www.ontla.on.ca/web/bills/bil...en&BillID=2099
78. (1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway if the display screen of a television, computer or other device in the motor vehicle is visible to the driver.
Exceptions
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply in respect of the display screen of,
(a) a global positioning system navigation device while being used to provide navigation information;
for radios, the only thing I see that would allow them is:
(e) an instrument, gauge or system that is used to provide information to the driver regarding the status of various systems of the motor vehicle.
And I don't know... is a radio an instrument, gauge or system that provides information about the motor vehicle system? Seems to me the car can pass safety without it and can start without it (okay, some can't).

How does this mat stick on the dash? I have a dealextreme GPS which works wonderfully (I really use the crap out of it) except the stock mounting system is really weak. My dashboard is dimpled and curved so not sure how well this thing will stick on it.

The bottom is sort of neoprene'y. I have this one from Garmin and it works amazingly.

Huh. Unless the government can find me a dash mount for my Curtis GPD359, they can piss up a stump.
