Grade 11 Worrying Thread

Is their anything I have to worry about going to grade 11?...In grade 10 I did bad in math (sixties) and english (seventies) ....but still have an 85 percent average?...Should I be worried?

Yes you do.

Your math mark (60s) is pretty much what youll get in senior maths. Theres 3 of these senior maths, and lots of good fields use 2 of 3 of these.

It's mostly your average that you have to worry about. As long as all post-secondary-relevant courses (ie. math in your case) are at least 60%, you should be fine. Grade 11 marks don't matter 99% of the time.

Remember average is calculated by UNIVERSITY courses only. If fluff courses like gym, history, music, arts bumped up your mark for you... know its not going to matter when you apply to university, cause they wont even glance at it.

Imo, skip music as much as possible, dont do the homework, dont practice, dont come in for recitals. Music is the biggest time-thief of the electives. And its not like university will even look at your music at all.

If you fail music, whatever. You didnt really need that credit in the first place.

*x.x smashy, math marks dont just improve overnight (my way of saying one semester) if you dont pump that math mark to mid-high 80s by the end of the semester, your chances of 90s in grade 12 plummet to about 0%.

Ive tutored people from grade 6-11. Honestly, if you dont have your foundations right (80+), its hell trying to fix it.

Imho, go get yourself a tutor NOW. Tell them you need your mark up to a 90 for grade 11, so youll stand a chance in grade 12. Since your math is a bit weak, Id suggust you go to wonderkids... they baby you like hell there, it smells funny, and they're slightly rude... but they dont beat around the bush like other places. Theyll say, "You suck at this. Go sit next to the grade 6 over there, and do the same thing as them." if you need it.

Wow, don't you guys think you're being a bit harsh on him? I've always kept around a low-80s average in my main courses like math, french (went to french high school) and sciences, even in grade 11. Even though I made maybe 83-84% in Math 11, I finished with around the same thing in grade 12. I've always told myself to try my best, then I know I wouldn't be dissapointed with the result because I put out 120% effort.
I would agree with one poster though. If you would really like to raise your marks and got in the sixties for math, you should consider getting a tutor.
Still, I'd say just to do your best, and try to not worry too much. Stress can affect grades a lot to.

From my experience, grade 10 was a cakewalk compared to grade 11. The differential difficulty level was exponential, not linear.

I know someone who almost failed math in grade 9-10 and is doing one of the best in gr 12...

Gr 11 is the grade where you realize you have to start working hard if you haven't started. If you've been slacking in grade 10, or weak in certain areas (math, for your case), grade 11 is your chance to try to pick it up. If you can't do it by grade 11, grade 12 will be hard. If you learn to manage time and work by grade 11, then grade 12 will slide by very easily.

Also just from personal experience if you want to do business related things in university theres almost no use for ALL 3 sciences... I am doing a science related course in University and I didnt even take all 3... at first you like to think of it as a "challenge" but the challenge will kind of crawl up your !@#$ eventually and you'll cry about why you took the course in the first place .. it doesnt really matter that "you dont need the course", if you work hard and you get a low mark naturally your self esteem goes down and that's never good to have in school.. if it's too much of a challenge or if you don't feel interested enough to enjoy the Sciences dont be obligated to take all of them! But if you can take the challenge (and do well) then kudos to you..

PS English in HS was bull!@#$. At least for me it was. If you were high and you wrote an analysis on a piece of abstract poetry work you'd probably get the highest mark in the class.

In order:
-Shouldn't be too hard, just make sure you understand everything..IMO, hardest unit is Trig Identities...conics/loci isn't that hard, just make sure you can understand the properties of them.
-Memorization, memorization, memorization and learning. Everything is memorization except mitosis/meiosis/genetics/photosynthesis, it's gay IMO.
-Physics was hit or miss for everyone...In my class, for each test the teacher had to adjust what the test was out of just so the class could get a passing mark...for the Energy test, it was out of 36, people did so baddly he had to make it out of 30 while I had 33/36...therefore I got 110%.
-I hated unit 1, it was all about atomic crap, I liked the quantitative aspects, stoich; solutions, gases. 10% Lab where you perform titration, get a competent lab-partner and it's not bad...the written part isn't too hard.
-Never took it, school doesn't offer it either.
-Relatively easy, math is simple...don't think it's all add-subtract, you have rules and techniques to follow (underlining, and memorizing the format). Case studies are hard..well only because our teacher insisited you have the exact answer as the book...which was written by Professionals. You learn some "laws" of accounting, hard to memorize at first, but as time goes on you understand them.
-You failed Grade 10? Damn, better get it in summer school...
-Music?

Math is not the only thing you should worry about.. 70s in English is also a no go... In fact, the only two courses you should worry about is Math and English, all university look at those..

you should be worried about pharmacology, that's usually found in 3rd year uni. good luck!

You want to go into business? Don't take science. Also find out which teachers in your school give out high marks.
