Greek Islands

Looking for some advice from people who have done the greek islands.

Planning on going May 20 - June 1st. Currently thinking Athens 2-3 nights, Santorini 4 nights and then ??? (another island) for 3-4 nights.

Any recommendations on what other Island to check out? It's my wife and I going, no children, and we like to relax as well as explore.

Mykonos? Crete? Was thinking of one of these. Thoughts?

Thanks!

I was not a fan of Mykonos. i haven't been to Crete but would choose that over Mykonos (if I go back to Greece, Crete will be on my list). IVe been to Naxos and enjoyed it alot. Great beach and great food.

If you want to relax and go back in time a bit (but still have WiFi, restaurants, etc), spend a night in Hydra. Amazing little island, with donkey as the primary mode of transportation (no cars on the island).

WE stayed at Naxos for a week. Really enjoyed. And I would live to go back to Rhodes.

My fiance and I did:

Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete.

Wished we didn't do Crete and spent more time in Santorini or another island.

Take a pick.
There are so many of them.
You can go to the main ones. Mykonos, Rhodos, Santorini itself deserves a few days. Oia is nice (expensive) but the beaches suck.
Crete is a vacation on it's own as it's huge.

The best options IMO are: Naxos, Paros, Ios, Milos. Short ferry ride and beautiful beaches.

If you want to relax and have a quiet time of your own, I would avoid those island that cruise ship frequently visit.
Once the cruise ship arrived, they dropped like 1500 people on the island and make it super crowded. Unless you stay off on the places that the cruise travellers won't be visiting in the island.

I just took the cruise stopped at Mykonos and Santorini last Oct, the scenery was amazing, but the feel is different when you have about 1500 visitors together with you in a little island. I had a difficult time to take a nice picture with no other people walking around you.

I did Rome, mykonos, naxos and santorini back in September 2015.

My favorite was santorini, get a hotel overseeing the caldera you won’t regret it.

I like naxos beach but a bit too underdeveloped for me.

Mykonos was nice. It is a bit more of a party island and the average person who visits is a bit younger but it was nice, some of the beaches are very nice.

I did this route cause it’s pretty straight and not too far apart on a ferry. Rhodes and Crete have more history but a bit further away.

I skipped Athens cause the riots were still an issue when I went and Greece was in the middle of an election and I didn’t want to get involved there but besides the historical part I was told Athens was fairly run down and Rome is rome and don’t regret my decision.

Santorini was my favorite island ... enjoy your time there.

that's basically what I did.

we did Athens 3, Paros 5, Santorini 7... (way to long in santorini)

I would say 2 nights Athens, 4 nights Santorini , and 4 nights at another island.

Hey there, I am actually going around the same time as you with my fiancee for our honeymoon! We've planned out most of the details, I used the comments on r/travel from Reddit to help me out a lot. We are doing:

Athens (1 night)
Santorini (4 nights)
Naxos (3 nights)
Athens (2 nights)

We're flying using Air Transat direct to Athens. We are also flying into Santorini from Athens, and out of Naxos to Athens. We're doing a fix of hotels and Air BnBs. We found a beautiful one on Naxos for cheap. Santorini is the most expensive island it seems. We found a hotel with a decent view.

I'd suggest listening to Rick Steve's Europe audio guide on Greece. Some good tips on there too.

Here are some tips I have collected:

General Greece Tips:

Best beach in Cycaldes - Milos:
Best food in Cycaldes - Sfinos:

General Tips:
Avoid the crowds during sunset. Best spot to view sunset is in Imerovigli :

Oia is less crowded for peaceful time, however many shops close early in the area:

1 - 2 h walk Caldera walk from Thera to Oia on Santorini:

Rent a side by side buggy instead of an ATV:
https://www.reddit.com/r/travel/comment ... n/dhdnpe6/

Tips from co-worker
  • Rent a small car instead of ATV. Roads are windy and steep, go through cliffs. A lot of accidents caused by tourists on ATVs.
  • Go to Fira for night life - bars and clubs.
  • Good restaurants are in Oia
  • Go to Santos winery and watch sunset - book early since it gets very full.

These were our visits in this order. Plus we did a day trip to Delos and Mykonos. Delos was brutal, sweltering hot, and no shade.

Hi, I'm thinking about doing something similar to your itinerary this summer. Where are you staying on Santorini and Naxos? The prices in Santorini especially in Oia are extremely high!

Yes I agree Santorini prices are nuts. I found this hotel which is not exactly on the coast but it's still close enough to everything. They also have a sea view from afar which we are okay with. The price was pretty amazing too considering everything on Santorini is nuts!

In Naxos we booked this AirBnB. It was incredibly affordable and the views and ratings seem very nice.
