Does any grocery store still have baggers? I don't go to the grocery store often but I've noticed the last few years I don't get anyone bagging my groceries at RCSS or Sobeys.
My first job was a grocery bagger and there would be 6-8 of us per shift. We were trained to ask
"plastic or paper" and we would even take turns walking groceries out to elderly ladies vehicles if it was slow inside. None of this seems to exist anymore yet groceries are WAY more expensive.
Sorry about the rant. I'm just tired of the way the service industry is going in the grocer field. I would Happily pay a bit more for this service to return.... And get rid of those damned self serve things! There used to be half a dozen clerks checking out groceries. Now there is 2 clerks and
6 self serves... Ugh!

Longo's often has someone bagging. Not only that, they either tape or put an elastic band around berry or takeout containers.
They can be slightly more expensive than RCSS, but I've found them consistently cheaper than Sobey/Metro/Loblaws. They don't charge for their bags either. I honestly find their customer service in all depts superior to any other grocer._______________
That's the end of my rant.

I like the self serve, I'm faster and can bag better (or the way I want) than the staff. There also tends to be less of a line.

Loblaws and fortino's recommend that once the cashier finishes your transaction that they will bag your goods.

Self serve lines FTW! But doesn't Costco have 'baggers'? The cashier scans the stuff and there's a person putting your stuff inside a box or the cart.

This^.
If no self serve is available, I arrange the food in order so that as it is scanned I put it directly in the bag. Hard stuff to soft stuff. If I have more bags, you just keep repeating it, hard items to soft/delicate items is succession as many times for as many bags as you will be using.

I prefer to bag my own groceries because I strategically place the items in each bag. I don't trust the store clerks mixing the raw meats with fruits, or placing a jar of pickles on top of the bread.

I know a few grocery stores that have baggers but those usually alternate between bagging and cart pulling.

I much prefer the self-serve lanes because generally the extremely slow people who don't know what they're doing, don't use them. You know, the ones who wait until the cashier tells them the total before they even start rummaging around for their cash. Or who can't decide whether or not they actually want something. Or who hold up the whole line by asking someone to go and check the price on the shelf. If you're not comfortable using the self checkout then you can't use it, so it ends up being almost like an express line.

When Superstore did have baggers (called courtesy clerks), they were often 15-16 year old boys who never bagged groceries in their lives. Very few of them knew how to sort and pack. Why would you want to have that kind of help? There are stores with cashiers who have been trained how to pack properly, now, that is a joy to see.
I like the self-serve if I can't find a familiar cashier. I honestly don't have a problem with packing my own groceries, no matter how large the order.

You know the way you feel as a customer us employees in retail are twice as frustrated....I'm a manager at a grocery store - I have friends in high places in other stores as well ( managers or full timers, I have a friend that's been in retail for 20+ years) and we're getting sick of the corporate cut backs or owners(when it's a franchise such as No Frills) cutting hours and cutting the staff.........
Owners (when it's a franchise such as no frills) or the corporate offices don't want to invest in hiring people or paying the skilled and experienced staff a decent wage...All they invest in is minimum wage part timers if that..In departments that once had 15-20 employees there cutting down to half that or less at the most and the quality and conditions are still expected to be perfect.....
I understand it's like that in all industries but in retail it's the worse.....Sales aren't going down in most stores, their increasing, profits are declining - departments are shrinking in staff but perfection is expected....It's insane.......
I have a friend for example that works in a produce department - On an average Saturday they do $50 000 in sales - his store is a store that all other stores in his chain are measured too because of the amount of sales they do overall......They used to have at least 15 people working on a Saturday - the busiest day of the week - now at times they have a maximum of 5......The produce department alone would get 25-30 skids of stock......Putting all that work on 5 guys is insane...
