Group Buy: Garage Doors (gauging interest)
Hey everyone,
My garage door is in need of replacement. I figured that I might as well take advantage of the Home Renovation Tax Credit (I have already reached the $1000 minimum) that expires in February and I also wanted to avoid the sales tax harmonization that takes effect in July.
I've been doing some research for the last little while on various garage doors and realized how difficult it is to choose a garage door, especially considering the lack of information/reviews on the internet. I also found that it's really hard to get an unbiased opinion from retailers.
I finally found a great installer (with help from a fellow RFDer) that offers very good prices on a wide selection of doors; I particularly like the Haas brand that he carries.
I was wondering if there was any interest here in setting up a group buy in the GTA. I could have him prepare detailed pricing for a range of garage doors (e.g. good, better, best, etc.). I'm confident that his pricing will be unbeatable.
Please post your interest here.
Take care!

Yes, he does carry Amarr. Amarr would be my second choice. Those installers that have dealt with both Amarr and Haas seem to rate the Haas product higher for comparable models.

If that's the case then I'm looking at either a (I have an insert I'd like to remove at top of the garage door).
Amarr
14' X 7' or 14' X 8'
Material Steel
Collection: Classica Collection® Series 3000
Panel Design: Lucern
Window: Seine Windows
Options: color - White
Price to include all hardware needed for install, including track, overhead springs etc. Price can either be for supply only or installed.
I have lots of time so no hurry.

Garage Doors
If you are looking for a garage door go to the local Costco.
The one in Brampton has had 2 road shows with Amarr and you can get their top of the line 2" R16 or something 8' wide lifetime warranty for $650 installed.
This is the best price I have seen anywhere.
3-5 of my friends have since gotten doors from this Costco deal.

I agree that the Amarr doors sold through Costco are a great deal. I got my top of the line single garage door for $650 installed. Bad part about Costco is that they are using Promaster installers. Promaster only got a 2.4 rating on home stars. I actually bought from Costco then returned it because my garage is low and I need a double track(extra $160), and I was not confident in this companies service or track record.

With all that said I would be interested in a group buy, but I would like to see reviews on the installer.

Very nice looking door.

I was aware of the Costco deal, and Pro-Master's bad reviews both here on RFD and on Homestars turned me off. Plus, their waiting list must be HUGE. If we have enough interest, I'll see if he can meet or beat the Costco price. The $650 didn't include GST right? Another question: was this a limited time road show type offer?

My father is looking for a garage door so if he hasn't already jumped the gun, I told him to wait for me to do some research, then add me in. He is also looking for a deal on getting a garage door opener installed.
I think the Costco deal is ongoing. I picked up the brochure and you can call them anytime. You don't have to wait for the road show. I, too, had concerns about Pro-Master and was looking at a couple of other places that had good reviews on Homestars.

I was told that as of August of this year the've entered to Costco Canada market and would be selling through Costco on a regular basis. I haven't checked Costco.ca yet.

I am pretty sure it included GST but I will check when I get home. I still have the purchase invoice.

Well, it seems like there's enough interest to get this going. He's going to put together some pricing for single and double doors made by both Amarr (e.g. Olympus 400/500) and Haas (e.g. Gold/Platnum series) along with window options. The doors chosen will be the common models, but should you want something different he can give you an individual quote. The prices will be for a standard install, so special situations like low head room will cost more. He will come out for a formal quote.
Keep your eye open for the formal group buy thread some time this weekend. I believe that the minimum will be 10 orders for the pricing to take effect.
